I bought this book to primarily learn bongos and mayble get a little taste of other hand instruments. Unfortunately, the author did not put sufficient detail into bongo playing in this book.For instance, in the "Let's Tune" section, the author tells you to flip the bongos and turn the tuning bolts. Eh..I think I could figure that out for myself. He doesn't recommend any tuning pitches or describe the relationship between the two individual bongo drums.Likewise, I assumed would contain more examples of bongo rhythms. In reality, the book only contains 4 examples of the very basic martillo and one example of each, POP, Shuffle, R&B and Funk beats. For the price of the book, I think the author could have mentioned more examples.To add icing to this wonderful cake, the last 25-30 pages of the book contains text in spanish; and its a complete repetition of the material presented in english. I think the author could have used the pages to instead present more detailed rhythms or examples or better yet, techniques. I honestly did not learn any technique from this book.I found that the author rushes and tries to cover too many little instruments and doesn't really put focus on Bongos. I feel irritated as I read this book, there is no personality to the writting.Buy this book only if you want to a brief introduction to various instruments like triangles or shakers. Mine is heading for a campfire.
This book really explains the basics of how to play bongos and hand percussion clearly. Not only is this book enjoyable to read, it also contains 2 play along cd's. The book covers different styles from pop, salsa, funk, to jazz, it makes percussion fun! This book also covers handbell, maracas, guiro and caxixi. Richie Gajate-Garcia is a master percussionist and a phenomenal instructor. What a great way to go from beginner to intermediate. I also recommend Gajate's instructional video! I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. Way to go Gajate!
This book has just enough for the experienced musician to get started playing bongo. There are chapters on many different percussion instruemnts (guiro, marracas, cowbell, etc) that will round out the player in a jam or gig setting as well. The author's tone makes this manual easy to read and I found all my immediate questions answered. If you want to learn hand percussion, feel confident when you order this book as well as the companion by the same author on learning to play the congas.
I'm a complete novice wanting to learn how to play the bongo's and percussion instruments. There's a lot of redundancy in the text. I didn't really learn anything from reading this. I haven't listened to the CD's yet but hopefully those will help.
