By FAR the best book written for people interested in learning calligraphy on their own. Unfortunately, the book is currently out of print and one has to rely on second-hand sellers, but trust me, it's worth it. This is the best book in its field. John Neal Booksellers is considering publishing a reprint, so there's hope. In the meantime, snap up a copy any way you can get it. THE BEST--BY the BEST!
Jacqueline Svaren has the most detailed and perfect guidelines for many fonts of calligraphy. Any calligrapher must own this book. I'm a left handed calligraphartist and her letter forms and stroke patterns are easy to flip around for me. Her letter forms are my favorite. This book was a little ratty but it was meant to be used and I recieved it just how i like it. Good to see this book has been around. Thanks!
This book is not only useful, but beautiful, as well. Every page is hand-written (no touch-ups!) and the lettering is superb. all letters are thouroughly demonstrated with stroke guides, and the commentary is an interesting read.Highly reccommended for anyone who has learned the italic hand and wants more to work with.
