Suspense, a missing person, twists and turns. This book sounded so up my alley ... and some of it was. There were many red herrings - some surprising, some not so much - to throw the reader off course as well as a rather dark and eerie feeling surrounding the disappearance of Aubrey's husband. It took me until about a third of the way into the book to really get invested into the story. The book had a different feel (I can't quite put my finger on it) and I liked the premise. Ellison tells her story by jumping back and forth - from Josh and Aubrey's childhoods, to their marriage as well as when he disappeared. Multiple points of view are also used to tell the story and while the changes in POV were clearly stated the switching back and forth between characters and time frames got to be a bit much after awhile. But, by using these flashbacks the reader sees where they came from, their difficulties and what they meant to each other, as kids and during their marriage. No one truly is as they seem and this idea permeates this book. I liked the fact that my opinions of these two love birds began to change as I learned more about them. While I found the set up to be a little haphazard, things started to fall together and I became engaged in the mystery surrounding Josh's disappearance. And then I wasn't. My interested started to wane in the middle for a few reasons. While I liked the red herrings there were a few things that didn't sit well with me. I didn't enjoy a few instances and character connections that were too serendipitous and far-fetched to be believable. Aubrey has a love interest but their 'love' was just too instantaneous for me to be believable and his connection to the plot was much too coincidental.
Thrilling and an edge of your seat book! I couldn’t put this one down!Five years ago Aubrey’s husband disappeared and she was the prime suspect in Josh’s death. She’s been acquitted of the charges and is trying to move on, and thinks she is, until she gets the official declaration of death and her world turns upside down yet again. This book had me guessing and second guessing everything and everyone. I wasn’t sure what happened to Josh, but as details started to come out, I was shocked. How could a husband do the things that Aubrey was finding out? It was hard to get a grasp on everything that happened in this book, but since we got to go back and forth in time, and see Josh and Aubrey fall in love, all the way up through the night everything changed for them was one heck of a ride. I loved Josh and Aubrey together, then I hated Josh, and then I liked him again, and now, well now let’s just say he got what he deserved.Aubrey’s character is stronger than people give her credit for. She’s gone through a lot in her life, even if you take out everything with Josh. She’s a fighter, but can’t comprehend that Josh would leave her forever with no explanation. My heart broke for her character, I was happy she was finally able to start moving on, and then I wanted to slap her for everything that happened in this book. To say my feelings for Aubrey are all over the place is an understatement. I’m still not sure how I feel about her even after the book ended and how everything played out.Not only do we get Josh and Aubrey’s story, but Daisy (Josh’s crazy mom), Tyler (Aubrey’s foster brother), Chase (the new guy), and Megan (who I’m still not so sure about).
Regarding this page-turning thriller, I’ve heard comparisons to GONE GIRL and THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN, and there’s no argument here. Both of those novels are full of twists and turns, not to mention psychological suspense. With NO ONE KNOWS, J.T. Ellison proves that she is masterful at creating a powerful story of harrowing switchbacks. It started five years ago, when Aubrey Hamilton and her husband, Josh, headed out for a weekend of fun at his best friend’s wedding. They got to the hotel where the festivities were to take place, split up for the bachelor and bachelorette parties, and then Josh simply vanished. A frantic Aubrey went looking for him. She looked everywhere. His friends looked for him. The cops looked for him. Oh, sure, there were signs of Josh, but none of them positive. The five years since have turned into some kind of hell for Aubrey. First, she was arrested, then tried for his murder, and all along vilified by the community and even some members of her family --- most notably her mother-in-law, Daisy. That woman hated her from day one. But, worst of all for Aubrey, she lost Josh, her long-time soul mate. Together since they were children, Aubrey can’t imagine a life without him. Now, his mother wants to have him declared dead. Daisy has already petitioned the state, and the state has agreed. So it’s official. Gradually, the horrifying reality settles over Aubrey. Her husband is dead. At least on paper. She might as well face it. Quit living in the past, her friends urge her, and move on. For her part, Aubrey just wants Josh back. In fact, she wants that so badly that she sees him around town. But she must be wrong. Everyone says so, including her therapist. The events of that fateful evening slowly unfold.
