The exemplars of the various hands are clear, concise and helpful not only for novice calligraphers, but for those more advanced in the art of calligraphy. Gaye is an extremely knowledgeable and competent artist with the ability to impart her skills and encourage those keen to learn the craft.It was interesting to see the progression in lettering from the formal to the more contemporary, gestural styles that today's artists are presenting in their workpieces.The section on digital calligraphy was of interest especially as much of today's work involves digital presentations.This is a valuable guide for a calligrapher's library.
I've been playing around with calligraphy since I was in high school. I recently took a calligraphy at a local arts program and bought this book as an addition reference. I think it's great--the instructions are clear and concise with excellent exercises to help master the flow and spacing for each different hand and it covers a variety of lettering styles. This is a comprehensive resource that is as practical as it is beautiful. (Take my word: I have a shelf of calligraphy books and I can't say that about the other titles.) My instructor was also impressed with the book's presentation and breath. I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in learning hand lettering.
It is very good book. It's well printed, with inspirational illustrations and of course step-by-step guides for lettering. I'm beginner in calligraphy and it was really helpful for me.
A friend recommended this book to me, and at first glance I wasn't too impressed. However, once I got into the book I discovered a wealth of information. The artist profiles were a nice touch - it was nice to see that even professional calligraphers had growing pains!My main beef with the book is not its contents (although the authors Italic exemplar is quite different from Eleanor Winters version) is the design of the book, particularly the typography. 6 pt and 8 pt image headings, faded to 40% to 60% black is very difficult to read! What were the designers thinking? There were other areas of the book that I found it difficult to read. Isn't the point of a book to communicate information?I would not recommend buying this book but if you have a chance to get it out of your local library do so...
Get this book. It's a wealth of information and I love that it covers all types of lettering and calligraphy!

This book is both beautiful and informative. I am a novice calligrapher, but certainly I can recognize mastery when I see it. Godfrey-Nicholls presents exercises, suggests supplies and materials, and features various calligraphers who have mastered the art.
