This book contains many short, simplified versions of popular old time, bluegrass, and folk songs. The author presents each transcribed into several useful keys (e.g., A, D, G, and C for "Cripple Creek"). The collection requires a beginner's knowledge of standard notation. As such it may be useful as a sight-reading exercise book for starting violin students. For the beginning student, this book is good to have in the music library. However, I found that Easiest Fiddle Tunes for Children (Easiest Tunes for Children) by Larry McCabe has arrangements that are somewhat more sophisticated and musically satisfying, especially the later entries.
This is a wonderful collection of classic fiddle tunes presented in an easy to read format with chords for guitar or piano to accompany the fiddler. I am planning to use it with both my violin and guitar students to enjoy playing together. I like the options of different keys for playing the melodies so that students can choose the one they are most comfortable with. Music is supposed to be fun and this is definitely a fun book!
