In my college piano class I went through the first book and was pleased with the format and progression of the content. It WAS beneficial to be taking music theory at the same time so the explanations in the piano book were understandable. I'm not sure they would have been easily grasped otherwise. Student book 2 is a continuation of the same format, but naturally moves into more advanced exercises such as score reading. Overall, this program was fun and challenging for me as a new piano student, but it does need outside instruction from a piano teacher as opposed to being a "self-teaching" text (which is was not intended to be).
I have been very pleased with this series of piano books for adults learning to play the piano. There are a wide array of exercises including accompanying, sight reading, solo pieces, technical exercises, etc. There is enough variety in the music choices to please just about everyone. I've enjoyed just flipping to something that hasn't been assigned and finding something I was interested in learning.
Great book, the only reason I gave it four stars is because of the stupid comb spine. It breaks really easily and is overall a bad design for a book. I know this because I had Alfred's Book 1 and it broke very quickly and easily. I'm sure Book 2 is going to break down soon with wear and tear. However the book is a very good instructional guide, and I was required to have it for my Keyboard 3 class for music majors. The price was much better here than at the bookstore in my school. Great sequel to book 1.
Use this book in piano class as an addition to the lecture and keyboard instruction. If I were learning without a teacher, this would not be my first choice. As a piano student, the Alfred Group 1 & 2 cover all the basic things you need to know from fingering to arpeggio's, progressions, etc.
I went through book 1 with group piano classes. I liked the teaching method so much, I hope to continue with book 2 on my own. There is a ton of music theory included, but I found that this knowledge adds to the enjoyment of appreciating well-written music.
Bought this book for classroom instruction. It is a very comprehensive book and I am satisfied. Very good book quality.
Textbook: This book met all necessary criteria in that it was the same ISBN that the professor required on the syllabus for the course. It was delivered in shiny new condition.
The best textbook in the piano theory and practice examples. I love the re-arrange piece in the book and supplemental piece from those master pieces are fantastic.
