_Drifters_ not only looks at art through the eyes of a professor with a combined total of over 90 group and solo exhibitions worldwide, but also from the viewpoint of lessening one's carbon footprint. A quick look into Dr. Pam Longobardi's life lets you know she's not your typical professor. Catch her during what appears to be an off period and you might find her paddling out to sea on a surfboard off the coast of Hawaii, though a closer inspection will reveal an ulterior motive to her pastime. A professor of drawing, printmaking, and painting with the Ernest G. Welch School of Art and Design, Dr. Longobardi's latest "obsession" is " with the material detritus of contemporary disposable consumer culture," according to a recent promotion with Sandler Hudson Gallery. What this means is that while most surfers ride a wave back to shore simply for the joy of it, Dr. Longobardi's eyes will likely be combing the shoreline for - you guessed it - trash. _Drifters_ is an exploration of and musing upon the findings she uncovers during these expeditions. Acutely aware of the impact human littering has on our environment, Dr. Longobardi combs coastlines all over the world in an effort to not only beautify the beaches of the world, but also to help those that can't help themselves. In a recent beach cleanup that included removing a massive fishing net from the coast of Ossabaw Island, Dr. Longbardi painstakingly combed over the entire mass, searching for tiny sea creatures unable to untangle themselves from the dreggy grip of the discarded netting. Her efforts yielded dozens of baby crabs and a few sea anemones had attached themselves to the rope fibers. And, as with the other beach cleanups in which she participates, Dr. Longobardi brought the net back home with her to provide inspiration for a new work of art. _Drifters_ is as inspiring as it is informative, and one can only dream of a world in which all artists had the same passion for their subject matter.
This book is beautifully printed and written - the artist is working with a truly important issue related to our oceans - worth reading
