This instructional is aptly titled. As a (very) senior citizen who speaks three languages, I had always regretted my inability to grasp the basics of reading music. I happened to see "Older Beginner..." on the desk of a high school music student. (I am a teacher, but not Music) With her permission, I glanced at this book and knew that it was for me. That evening I ordered it from and bought an inexpensive keyboard. Older Beginner Piano Course Level 1 proved to be the ideal vehicle for learning the basics and allowing the more mature beginner to progress. It opens the door to hours of enjoyment and allows you to progress to the next level(s). If you thought you never could, if you regretted that you never did, this is the one for you!
I use this piano method for all of my students who are at least in 6th grade, although I've had some third graders who have gone through it. It is an old-school course. No pictures, no filler songs, no coloring activities. It moves quickly, but it still covers everything you need to know, and the songs draw from a rich musical tradition (no original compositions by the book's authors). It's my favorite method book to teach from.
This was the book recommended by my instructor. I had an older book that focused more on the basic five finger approach withour much moving around. This one makes you stretch out a little more, so to speak, but the pace is pretty good, though the difficulty level fluctuates sometimes from very difficult to way too easy. The final pieces at the end were quite difficult, very different than the prices before, and requires a lot of practice to become proficient at them. The song selection is good, with a good mix of classical and more folkish songs.
My daughter rates this as a cool book, good for beginner teens, would recommend it to friends, family, any older beginner that does not wish to learn to play row, row your boat or twinkle, twinkle little star..
This course starts off with simpler pieces and exercises, and gradually gets more advanced. You will learn to play chords with the left hand in the C, F, and G position. You will learn the simpler time signatures. Our high school teacher uses this book to teach his beginning piano class. I like the method that the author uses to help students advance in their skills. I would recommend getting a teacher to go with it though. Perhaps someone very gifted with music could learn how to play without a teacher using this book alone.
I am so pleased to be using this book for piano lessons. It is done more the way an adult can learn. I have had 5 lessons so far and although this is a lot of work and challenging, it is worth the effort. I still feel I need a book more focused on the notes to supplement my learning, but, I can actually translate those dots and lines into something resembling music now and am approaching page 30 in just a few weeks! This works for me. I will have to get the next level soon.
This book was assigned to me in my Music 111 class. I have never played piano in my life before so I was a little scared, but this music book and of course my teacher made it so easy to learn.
Great way to get older kids and adults off to a quick start! Much better than traditional primer method for younger students.
