A terrified voice cried out in the night."Who are you? What do you want?"The sound of snapping twigs closed in on the five teenagers enjoying an evening around a glowing campfire at Gitchie Manitou State Park. The night of music and laughter had taken a dark turn. Evil loomed just beyond the tree line, and before the night was over, one of the Midwest’s most horrific mass murders had left its bloodstains spewed across the campsite. One managed to survive and would come to be known as the “Gitchie Girl.” Harrowing memories of the terrifying crime sent her spiraling out of control, and she grasped at every avenue to rebuild her life. Can one man, a rescue dog, and a glimmer of faith salvage a broken soul? This true story will touch your heart and leave you cheering that good can prevail over the depravity of mankind.Through extensive research, interviews, and personal insight, the authors bring a riveting look at the heinous crime that shook the Midwest in the early 1970s. Written from rare, inside interviews with the lone survivor, who broke nearly four decades of silence, this shocking yet moving story will not soon be forgotten.

Amazing story of triumph over tragedy. I have read true crime books by the hundred's over thirty five years, and rarely find a subject that I don't have at least some knowledge of the crime. I had no idea what the story would tell, but was intrigued by the title, Gitchie Girl. From the first chapter I was sucked into wantingto know more and where this story going to lead. Although not a long read, 164 pages, it is not short in bringing the reader to the heart of the amazing resilience of a thirteen year old girl. Already wise beyond her years, suddenly forced to step further into adulthood by absolutely no fault of her own. Fear gripped me while reading the further "torture" she endured in order to "help" the investigation. Yes, it is necessary for police to gather evidence, all evidence even if the victim feels like she is being raped again. Only this time there are bright lights exposing every inch of private parts that somehow over a short time, are no longer private. No longer yours, which in the mind of the "victim" translates to "My privacy is no longer mine. My most intimate part of my body is now " evidence ". " I am no longer me." To the police I am the victim. To my family I am the one that they feel they have to choose their words carefully. To my friends someone that they love but don't know any longer how to talk to. To my neighbor's and everyone in my town I am "that girl.". I think I might have outed myself. I am not Sandra, but we are the same age. Our lives have been lived in a strange parallel. Right down to my recently volunteering at a no kill shelter. I didn't plan to go that far in my review. As awful as it sounds, all she went through, I didn't start crying until I read about the thrown away dog.
