I purchased this item by recommendation of my voice teacher, and have been pleased with it. The CD is at times a little hard to follow along with only because of the interpretation of the performer. Once you learn where their hidden ritardandos and other little "personality" inputs are, it is a pleasure to sing to.The music itself is very pretty, although I enjoy the "10 Christmas Songs for Solo Voice" by the same arranger even more. This book and CD has it's simple moments along with it's majestic moments, so it's a nice range of mood. The sheetmusic is written only for piano, and the CD is just piano music. There are no samples of how to sing the songs.The lowest note that you sing out of any of the songs is an "A" below middle "C" and the highest not is an "F" at an octave and a half above middle "C". There are alternative notes added in the music if either of these are too low or too high, but overall there is a range of almost two octaves.I would recommend this item. It is perhaps priced a little high, but considering the hours of pleasure that I have had with it, I would say it's worth it. Mark Hayes has his musical signature on most all of his work and these arrangements are no exception to that. They are nice variations on mostly familiar songs, and are more difficult for the piano accompanist than for the soloist, in my opinion. For me these books and CDs are an entertaining way to exercise the voice, much less boring than regimented vocal exercises.
This product is the MEDIUM-HIGH edition of this book. Make no mistake, if you order and are hoping to receive the MEDIUM-LOW version, you will not.The only item on  that includes the MEDIUM-LOW book is the one that also comes with the accompaniment CD, for ten dollars more.
The songs are for medium high as expected and good for those looking for recital pieces. There are fresh arrangements of some old gospel songs which delights the ear, particularly in the piano part. For intermediate pianists, the accompaniment might be too advanced, but doable if practiced.
I purchased this book to use in a college class (I am a music major). These songs are classics hymns that have been given beautiful accompaniments. However, the arrangements are a little different than what you would hear in a traditional church hymn book. The songs are still recognizable, but have been made into pieces that you could perform (rather than being very simple for the purpose of congregational worship like the original versions).
Our family jokes that I'm professionally in love with Mark Hayes' style of chord progressions. This collection has some pieces that are beyond normal church use but, as expected, they are original, fresh and interesting. Most books of sheet music have only one or two songs I'd like enough to use while this one has only one or two songs I would not use. Now we just have to decide which one will be chosen for our daughter's voice competition.
Mislead by the previous review, I bought the book this review is filed under thinking I was buying a book with CD. (I have borrowed it twice, from two different friends, both included the CD in the book although not in the title, I didn't know the CD is not automatically included).It came with no CD. Re-checking I see that the order's title doesn't specify CD, but neither did the title of the book I borrowed from a friend. I guess I got what I paid for but I wouldn't have bought it if I had not been mislead by the mis-location of the previous review.
I use this collection quite often in my voice studio. It is wonderful for singers who are asked to solo in church. The arrangements are beautiful and different. Highly recommend this collection.
