I try to review a book as to how well done I think it is and not necessarily whether or not it fits my style. Mr Macey likes collage - I don't particularly care for it in most forms. But I think he uses it very well. His writing in general is personal and up-beat. Even his "humdrum" section, the one with all the materials you need and blah-blah, is done with a personal tone which makes it worth reading.His section on "how-to" is well varied but he doesn't hold your hand. He does assume you do know a little of what he's talking about; and while there are a number of examples for each, he doesn't take it step-by-step.Mr Macey paints on a large scale which uses a lot of paint but he doesn't assume you have tons of extra cash lying around even in his recommendations for purchases. His instructions can easily be adapted for a smaller canvas.All in all, I liked the book and would recommend it for the advanced beginner on up.
As opposed to some painting books that showcase a lot of artists' finished pieces as inspiration, this book offers thoughtful, step-by-step instructions for using a variety of the author's techniques and approaches. The author walks through 9 complete demonstration paintings, each of which contains 18-44 detailed steps with images.I know a fair amount of painting but am looking to expand my creative range and have been building an art book library to that end.This is definitely one of my best purchases so far. I really like the simple, colorful style of the paintings themselves and the layout of the book is great. Macey should write a book on how to write art books ;)
I am already good at abstract painting, just needed to go deeper in my creative brain! This book is the book to crack open that part of the brain! The artist's in this book are making it too easy for us to take our painting straight to the edge! For all mediums if you ask me, not just acrylic!

Love this book! He provides simple explanations of techniques to improve one's painting. I recommend it for the simplicity of explanation and plenty of examples on how to use the techniques.
