I found these stories lacking. My sister has the unabridged version and she says they are much better. My advise is to be careful and buy only unabridged versions.
I was hooked on Patricia Cornwell's "Kay Scarpetta" series from the first one I listened to which was "Blow Fly"- unabridged, (which has remained my first choice or favorite book from out of this series).With "All that Remains" and "Cruel and Unusual" they were both good, however due to them being abridged in content, I wasn't as pleased as I have been with her other books and I really wished I had listened to these before I did Blow Fly~ The series just got better and better with each book in the series.I agree completely with another review that unabridged versions of books really do make a LARGE difference in the overall impact a book can have. I have also found the abridged versions lacking, leaving the impression you missed something. I have found to be the case with all the books I have listened to no matter who the author is.
I bought this series to take along on vacation. Did not get to do that on my last trip, so I have been enjoying the books while doing house chores. Great entertaining and very well written books. Excellent reading done.
Cornwall is a writer of detail. Following characters and plot lines is a little tedious but I get why so many people like her writing. The narration is good and I think this set is worth buying. It will stay in my library.
I liked the authors style although sometime I find the story line rather drawn out...have read several books in this series and I thought even though a repeat I wouldn't mind listening again while traveling...
This is my 4th Scarpetta novel and will be my last. In every story Scarpetta is falsely accused or framed. How lazy, formulaic and predictable. Cruel and Unusual particularly does not work as an audio book. It may work better when it is read, but the many gratuitous diversionary threads make listening to it as an audio book hopelessly confusing. Worst of all, the ending is flat and unsatisfying, with the murderer finally identified but the story just stopping cold with no apprehension of the villain or word about what happened to him. Boo!
The narration was fine, I just thought these books poorly written. They both have a plot that wanders all over the place, but everything is explained and tied up into a little bow at the end. These are the kinds of mysteries that make me cynical about the whole genre.
Some of her best. I haven't found one that I don't like.She has also chosen excellent people to do the reading.They can make or break the intensity of a story. Patricia Cornwellis a descriptive, suspensefull writer!
