People pick this up expecting to get an extremely close description of Jeff Beck's long and extraordinary career, and that's exactly what this book provides. Beauty of diction is not one of the criteria--but I learned a lot I'd never known.
Jeff Beck has been labeled "the greatest guitarist of his generation" by numerous other guitar heroes. As borne out by Martin Power's exhaustive - and sometimes exhausting - biography, Beck certainly deserves that honor although he'd be the first one to shrug that honorific off. Beck was and is his own man and musician and worst enemy. HOT WIRED GUITAR is a fascinating chronicle of that talented and complex individual.Power's book charts Beck's life and times from day one to his breakout splash with the Yardbirds and his subsequent career cranking out solo projects, forming new bands, sitting in on other artists' records, performing at charity affairs and forever working on his beloved classic cars. Beck's time on earth has been marked by his musical versatility and itchy musical feet that saw him creating new bands and new sounds only to move on to new projects and new bands, ever the musical explorer. The result of all that musical wanderlust is an incredible output of music.I first became aware of Beck through his recordings with the Yardbirds. The group may have been good with Clapton but, when Beck joined them, the Yardbirds took off musically. Hearing Beck tear through various songs, I kept thinking, 'what planet is that guy from?' When Beck left the group, the (musical) sky became the limit.If any musician deserves a 500+ page biography, it's Jeff Beck. He's boldly gone where few musicians went before and still is. Beck's life is well-told in HOT WIRED GUITAR. Highly recommended.*****One nitpick. Couldn't the author and/or publisher have come up with a better pix of Beck than the "police blotter" shot on the cover? He deserved better.
I have both the first and second printings of this book , obviously I am a big Jeff Beck fan, but the book is extremely well done, well written, giving you a good feel for the times Jeff grew up in and how be became the worlds greatest guitar player.

One of the most well written and well researched rock bios I've read. And Beck's great talent and amazing assortment of musical adventures makes it a compelling read. Highly recommended.
