I stalked the ups driver, I counted the days, I checked my email daily and when it finally arrived I tried to consume all the delicious information in one day but alas, it is so packed full of information, instruction and beautiful art I had to slow down and savor it.If you are looking for a beautifully illustrated, marvelously written book on the art of lettering this is the one! I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am to complete each and every challenge. Joanne Sharpe has written a book that will help be become a better artist but also has me asking myself the hard questions. Questions like why I do this, am I willing to put the work into this art form and how I will use the knowledge once it is mine. II cannot recommend this highly enough...not enough stars and not enough praise for Joanne Sharpe.
So excited to get Joanne's book, especially after taking one of her classes in OKC. Like her classes, her book shows step by step how to do each project. I was new to all this, and her "gentle" nudging and encouragement , totally relaxed me as she pointed out we each have our own unique handwriting and we should embrace it! Her pictures and colors are so vibrant and inspire you to "just play." Can't wait for her next book-she is a genius artist and it was such an honor to get to know her in person. Love the format, illustrations and instruction. This book is fun. I tried calligraphy and it wad too rigid for me. This is playful and perfect.
The art of whimsical lettering teaches you how to create letters and journals filled with many different ideas! Joanne recommends types of paper to use as well as what markers to use!
What caused me to look for this product was trying to be creative with my lettering for an art journal and I liked the font on the book. When I couldn't see the inside of the book through , I was a little frustrated but even more intrigued. I went to the book store and saw the item. I thumbed through believing it was exactly what I was looking for. Then at home going over each page, I noticed that it is the same font in a different back ground, with squiggly lines around the letters, or coloring the same font a different color with some ivy leaves. If you know lettering and would like to have a book of whimsical and a series of different fonts, this is not the book for you. But if you are starting out and needing some guidance or inspiration, this is the thing you are looking for. I hope this helps someone.
It brings the joy of whimsical experience just flipping through the pages. I really liked her basis for getting started. No other lettering experience necessary.
I have always hated my own handwriting, and this book has shown me so many ways to take what I know and make it interesting. Not only is Joanne Sharpe a gifted teacher who shares all she knows, this book is beautiful and chock full of information. I own pretty much any book on art journaling, and I have never seen so much buzz about a book coming out. This one delivers in spades. My journal has never looked so good!
My book was pre-ordered and came today. Yeah! There are many art and mixed media books on my shelves, some better than others but this is one I know I'll use until it falls apart. Well, maybe not really fall apart but definitely a winner for me. This is exactly what I needed to improve the lettering in my journals. And it is just plain fun the way Joanne writes about doing the exercises and using the results. Her delightful illustrations complement the text and give added dimension to the lettering lessons. She suggests a journal to use for practicing the letters. Luckily I had one waiting to do just that. I rarely write reviews but could not resist shouting praise for this book.
