I became very interested in this man especially after watching the series “Turn” and reading the book “Washington's Spies” by Alexander Rose. In this memoir Tallmadge writes a good deal about his participation in the war, battles etc. but next to nil about the biggest contribution to the war effort, the “Culper” spy ring. So I am wondering, is he just a humble man or was running a spy ring secretive or embarrassing? I am sure Andre would appreciate his remarks in this work, I felt deeply for Andre, after all he was a gentleman and would have much preferred that Arnold the traitor would have swung in his stead. The memoir is worth reading if you have a passion for history as it is a first person narrative.
This is an excellent first hand account of one key player's perspective on the Revolution. I wish there he had not been so modest and written more of it because he was right in the middle of the most important events in our country's war for independence. This is the man who spoke with the spy Major Andre after he was caught helping Benedict Arnold. He was right at Washington's side for most of the important battles, and he ran a spy ring. All Americans should know his name and his contribution.
Being a history enthusiast, I found this memoir most enlightening. The details of Col. Tallmadge's actions in the war for Independence revealed incidences that are not found in history courses. I recommend highly.
I loved it especially since I read "George Washington's Secret Six: The Spy Ring that Saved the American Revolution". It is a shame that Col. Tallmadge is not a household name.
While I liked the book, there was little in it, other than a few references, to the spy ring made famous on AMC's series TURN. Seems like the advertisers took advantage of this in advertising the book. That aside, I liked the personal insight to various events, including Major Andre's execution.
It's like going back in a time machine. It's amazing that the master spy, to his death did not reveal the ring, or it's participants. Next time "The Scarlet Coat" is on TCL movies- watch it. This Book influenced it.
I had been watching "TURN" on TV. I wanted to learn more about Col. Tallmadge and who he really was.I enjoyed the Journal with all the specifics of the Revolution.
A very good recollection of the eight year American Revolution. Full of brief notes, the volume is best read with a detailed atlas close at hand.Richard, Sausalito, California
