Bob Labbance's biography of the life of Walter Travis is an excellent account of an accomplished golfer and under appreciated architect. Well researched and punctuated by terrific photos, the book follows the life of a man who took up golf when most men were giving it up and, in the span of a few years, went on to capture not only three U.S. Amateur titles but the British Amateur as well. He studied the art of putting to become the greatest putter of his generation and applied that same discipline to become a well respected and equally well desired architect in a time when the quality of Americas golf layouts was in its nascent stage. His principles of agronomy were well documented and his ability to convey his concepts and opinions was captured in "The American Golfer" which he was the editor and publisher of for a number of years. If you have respect for the pioneers of today's game this book is a must read.
Interesting to read about the connection between the player and the architect. A very different story, I would say
