I've been playing James Brown songs by ear ever since I started playing bass 17 years ago. So when I saw this book the first few times I passed on it, because I figured I already knew most of this. But the author points out numerous common mistakes - particularly regarding use of the flatted seventh and the major seventh - that I'd never really caught before. I can remember thinking as I was playing songs like "I Feel Good" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" that something didn't sound quite right, but I just presumed that there was no way the bassist was playing a major seventh leading back to the root. Well, I was proven wrong! As another reviewer points out, there are no songs transcribed in their entirety, but there are some that go beyond just the fundamental groove. God help anyone trying figure out Bootsy Collins' bass line on "Sex Machine"! I will get through this book more quickly than some of my others, but I am glad I bought it.
These are good transcriptions. Not the entire song and not with every variation but a really good summary of the style and the basslines. Recommended!
This book was receieved in excellent condition and the contents (exercises) will keep me busy for awhile. It arrived in pefect condition and in a timely manner.
