I learned to play the banjo primarily from this one book. I have a 1st edition, so yes, I learned to play in 1980 - 1981. Or I began then. This was a time before every instructional book came with a CD that demonstrated all the tunes, so it helped if you already had an ear for bluegrass songs and fiddle tunes. I see that the book STILL has no CD, so if you aren't familiar with several of the pieces in the table of contents, you might want to augment this book with Tony's fiddle tune book. As for the bluegrass song solos in this one, start listening! Become familiar with how a banjo solo fits within a bluegrass song. With that under your belt, these spicy solos should be a snap to learn. Just be prepared to practice. If you have a burning desire to play the banjo, buy this book. I practically lived with my copy. I'm not surprised it's still in print. : )
Not what I expected at all. I found the tabs useless and unreadable compared to how most tab is written. It was just too confusing to be any good. Trischka spent way too much time talking about styles and not enough working on the tabs to make them less confusing. I admit that I'm a newbie at the banjo, but based on other books I've seen and own, this one pales in comparison. I found that trying to read and play that tab was just too frustrating. I wound up having to rewrite them for myself. Also, too many of the songs required a capo. This is not really helpful to my needs either. This book was more frustrating than helpful and actually put me OFF from learning the banjo rather than helped. I've decided to do my own thing from now on and quite buying books that are a waste of time and money.
