During my university years, this book was the instruction book for Music Theory I and II. If you harmonized in the style of Bach, you were ok. Years later, when playing organ for a German Lutheran church, where the hymnals contain the vocal line and 17 verses, no harmony, this came in very handy. I simply harmonized every verse differently according to the text, as Bach had done. The pastor came to me one day and said, "We like your playing. You play like old country". That was one of the highest complements of my musical career, all because of this book.
A fine collection of harmonized Bach Chorales. This collection is a must-have for serious intermediate-level Pianists and students of music theory. Bach was a master harmonizer, he presents the student of music with delightful collection of variations in his Chorales. Taking his 4-part harmony apart will lead to a fascination with his skills and the smoothness of his modulations and unbelieveable chord changes. As a college student back in the '50s, I used a similar collection to study Music Theory. I highly recommend this collection for all serious students of Music. Learn from the master!
This little book contains 101 Bach Chorale settings with very nice English texts, many of which are by the 19th-Century translator Katherine Winkworth. These settings are in general quite accessible to church choirs made up of ordinary people who love to sing to the Lord. Five stars.
We have used this collection for forty years as a go-to source of what to sing during the communion distribution. Refreshingly the translations use Thee and Thou. And of course lots of good material for the student of counterpoint.
