I have read all of Marcia's other books and thoroughly enjoyed them. This is why I jumped at the chance to get another one for $.99. Big mistake. This book is only 45 pages. It's actually a short story, and should be marketed as such. If I had gotten it for FREE, I wouldn't have been upset, but I PAID for 45 pages. Plus, I liked the basic story idea, and would like to see it fleshed out as a whole book! This reads like a concept she presented to a publisher who said, "Let's just sell it as is." You know, I get upset when publishers market an old book under a new name, or try to pawn off an old short story collection from a name author as a "new" book. I felt the same way this time. Ripped off!
I thought this short story was fun and I liked having a bridge between books (it seems like a year?? - too long -- or so since her first novel - which I liked very much) And it was cool getting to know a little more about Rachel and Bailey and the unshakeable Dorian. Nobody sets an opening mood like Clark. Supportive, intelligent and when appropriate, goofy, relationships, entertaining court story - always compelling insights into why we and they do what they do... nobody else seems to do it as realistically or as charmingly... and Clark occupies this world and its inhabitants better than just about anybody. Clark is able to pull off quite a feat; she's respectful of and serious about the duty a prosecutor holds and the ethics of the law and how it's administered but her character doesn't always take herself seriously... I guess you have to have a sense of humor to do that job day in and day out and not lose it and it shows. Bravo!
I love this new series by Marcia Clark. A breath of fresh air to find a good author who doesn't need foul language and sex to deliver a good story! I read "Guilt by Degrees" and I have just finished "Guilt by Association" and am ready to start "If I'm Dead". Marcia Clark cannot write fast enough for me!
Fiction45 pages / 252 KBFootnotes/Endnotes: NoIllustrations: NoSuitable for eReaders: Yes4 StarsOK, I admit, I didn't do my homework, and thought I was buying a full fledged novel when I bought this (caveat emptor!) short story. While it was a fun read, it was also somewhat predictable. It was fun, and I enjoy the protagonist, ADA Rachel Knight.I don't want to give away the ending, but if you're as old as I am, you've seen it on Perry Mason;-) And, you'll recognize it. I think I've seen it on a couple other shows of similar ilk.For $0.99 it was worth it. And, like I said, if I'd done my due diligence, I still would have bought it, but wouldn't have been so upset on page 45 to find the end!
I enjoyed what there was to the story but I sure would have liked a little more. I felt like I was just getting into it and "WOW" it ended. The biggest surprise for me in this story was just how short it was. I was all ready for a good read and had it finished in such a short time that I sat wondering why I didn't choose something that I could have really gotten into. Maybe I'm just not good with "shorts". Get it if you just want a really short afternoon read.
This book was really just a short story. It was ok as far as it went but at about 50% suddenly it was over. The remainder was a teaser for two other books Ms Clark had written. The story felt like the beginnings of a real novel extolling how clever the main character was but little about anything else.
I would say this is probably not her finest work. I'm guessing she was finding her voice for this character a bit. But the character shows promise, and I would certainly read a more fleshed-out version. This book seems very brief and kinda unfinished. I have read her other stuff, though, and she is an EXCELLENT crime writer.
I wanted to read this book because of course I remember who Marcia Clark is. I thought it would be interesting. And it was. But I thought it was a little wooden. I also would have liked a longer book, something with more detail and maybe even a plot. Even though I gave this story a 3, I think I will read another one of her works, just to see if she gets any better, before I give up on her completely.
