I remember the first time I received a Tommy Igoe Groove Essentials Poster... It changed my life! At the time I was performing in a Rush/Dream Theater cover band, and was heavily into the progressive scene (still am). However I was asked to go and tryout for a jazz/latin ensemble. I had played a little jazz and could hack through an ill conceived Bossa Nova (which I thought was also a Samba, Soca and Songo!). When I looked at the poster there were many gooves I had never seen before and did not know they even existed. Slowly I started to work through the grooves, with the rock ones being pretty simple. Then I hit pattern number 10, which I still find a challenge to play, and of course then came 15, 35, 36, 42 and 43 then I was in real trouble! The Groove Essentials Poster and the Book (which I purchased a few months later) changed the way I approached drumming.The book itself goes through each pattern on the poster and adds between two or four additional variations for each. Tommy then lays out a chart below to show how the pattern may be utilized with the accompanying CD. Beneath all the charting there is a description of the pattern and usually some history to its origin or some helpful advice if you are having difficulty.The book is very well laid out and the grooves contained within are in a logical groupings. Be aware however that once you are in a grouping it does not flow from easiest to hardest. for instance in the World Section of the book the Nanigo (very advanced groove) comes before the Tango (easy groove), so do not be concerned if you are struggling with a particular pattern because it is not arranged so that the follow on patterns will destroy your self esteem.
