I bought this book because my teacher at The University of Mobile had just given me a third piece out of it, but it wasn't the one I wanted Lol. So I went and bought the whole book for myself. It is not disappointing. I've played through about half of it now and every piece is so beautiful and challenging. Segovia has done a great thing for us, publishing more of Sor's work. Thank you Segovia! Get This Book!
If you are studying playing guitar on your own, do not repeat my mistakes. I bought the book version devoid of CD (ISBN 9780793504367). For a while I thought I did well, since the music I’ve been paying sounded very pleasant, until I heard on CD, two of the studies which I was practicing, performed by guitarist Norbert Kraft. I was shocked, the two same studies played by Kraft sounded completely different from mine, I even couldn’t recognize the music, as if we were playing different musical notes altogether. It turned out that the reasons for these discrepancy were: one of the musical pieces consist of two voices (Study 2) and the other (Study 6) is played with uncommon accentuations, facts to which I wasn’t aware since Segovia didn’t give any introductory remarks for each individual study regarding its musical structure. Hence the 4 stars. Concise information about this missing link and technical performance tips can be found for 15 out of 20 studies, in Frederick Noad‘s book “100 Graded Classical Studies” .To avoid the mess & frustration, I was in; purchase book with the CD,(ISBN 9780793543687) unless you have a teacher to guide you.Segovia provided plentiful fingering for left and right hands, extensive expressive indications, dynamics instructions and tempo. The 20 studies aren’t just a good finger stretchers but mainly musically rewarding.
Nice printing with good size (not too large, but confortable). I like the feel of professionally edited and printed sheet music and this one is fine. It's nice to have both the original Sor's tempo indications and Segovia's one too. My only complaint is that some studies have been placed so that you have to turn the page in the middle of the music and I've already seen other possibilities with these that prevent this.
It's the 20 Segovia edited Sor Etudes, so it its what it is - it's great; but, the inside cover talks about "This book/audio edition provides..." and I didn't receive a recording with the book. I guess I didn't read what I was purchasing close enough. Or, I didn't know about an accompanying recording until I read the inside cover. Oh well, I'll look for online, now that I know. Other than that, I'm looking forward to working on these.
Highly recommend this book, I use this book, in the guitar program in South Florida best private school. The studies are part of the auditions for All-State in Florida State guitar ensemble.
Have used this book for years. It is a challenge for intermediate thru advanced players. Well worth the money and the time spent studying it.
Classic edition Segovia selected and edited of Sor etudes. Must have if you are a classical guitarist.
This book is essential to classic guitar learners. I recommend it as a teacher and as a performer.
