This book changed my life as an artist. I picked it up the paperback version of this in the late 80's when it was first published and it shaped the style of art I do today.My favorite person in this book is still relatively unheard of: Kenny Sharf. Many of the artists are unknowns, and that is what I like about this book. It's nice to hear about artists other than the standard Andy Warhols. It talks about graffiti art, punk art, the clubs (CBGBs, Club 57, Mudd Club), the music (the Ramones, Klaus Nomi, Television to name a few), the parties (Lydia Lunch, Ann Magnuson, the Fun Gallery)...the whole art scene in the East Village during the 70s and 80s. Most of the illustrations are in black and white (at least in the paperback), which is a shame because I bet the artwork is better represented in color.Great read!
Well, i am not from New York and don't know how authentic this book is - but i certainly enjoyed it. Art after Midnight chronicles the development of the East Village Art Scene. It's interesting to read about Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat before they became famous. Lots of great pictures and history. A treasure.
This is a great book, I bought a few of them at the time (first edition) and I collected the art from many of the artists and also some great one at the time not mentioned in this particular book, but in others. I happened across this book when it was referenced in another book I was reading and was lucky enough to find it in a used book store. It is the vibrant tale of an even more vibrant time in NYC cultural history where music and art, uptown and downtown, hip hop and punk interacted and produced enduring changes in both the musical and artistic worlds. I came to this book primarily as a fan of music and the NYC punk scene, but in reading endlessly about the music of the period and places like CBGBs and Max's Kansas City, I was struck by the rich cultural renaissance that accompanied punk and followed in its wake in places like the Mudd Club, Irving Plaza and Club 57, exemplified in people like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Klaus Nomi among many others chronicled in the book, and particularly in how all these forces interacted and played off each other. I read this book cover to cover in a few hours and was provided an invaluable portrait of a world that is in one sense lost but also still present in the cultural waves it created. I'm happy I discovered this book and even happier that I read it and added it to my collection.
