I read this book because I know the Fabians. I was at church the day that Deborah introduced herself to the community. On that day, I was so struck by Leslie and Deborah's eloquence and to their commitment to finding a shared path on which they both could be true to themselves and to each other. As I read Leslie's book, I found myself totally lost in one of the most extraordinary love stories that I have ever read. A love story between two people...a love story of a person learning to love herself. I encourage all people, especially those who are uncomfortable with the concept of being transgender, to read this book. Just as my children have learned to celebrate the fact that love comes in all different shapes and sizes, a reader will, too. This story will also give hope and strength to people who are on a similar journey.
I had no idea what was I was in store for when I downloaded this book, but was pleasantly surprised on how the story uplifted my spirit and opened my heart. A must read for anyone who wonders how best to deal with life's big changes.
This should be required reading for any married transgender person (and spouse) who is even thinking about transition. Too many times, we as transgender people forget that our spouse has as much invested in our transition as we do. Leslie brings forth her honest emotions both negative and positive regarding her spouse's transition and the way she perceives it. Through this she reminds us to think of our partners. But not only is it an honest account of her view of Deborah's transition, it is a story of deep love between two people. A beautiful love that withstands a transition that shatters many relationships. An inspirational book well worth reading.
This is a very frank and touching true story of a woman's support of her husband's happiness, of his need and her understanding. I learned a lot from it, and respect both the author and her husband for their courage and sincerity and willingness to share their story with us. I know people who have been on this journey and would have liked to ask them questions which I knew were too personal to ask. This book answered a lot for me. I hope it helps other people trying to achieve their authenticity and be supportive of one another, and helps others understand why anyone would go through all this trouble and expense to realize a life's dream that not everyone understands. Well-written and easy to read.
Frankly, I was uncomfortable with the idea of gender change and reluctant to read this book. I am quite glad now that I did read it. I found it to be a rare love story, engagingly told with surprisingly levelheaded candor. It is an inspiring look at a couple maintaining their deep love for each other through an increasingly difficult series of problems. Leslie Fabian's lucid explanations helped me to understand the profound challenges that led a highly respected surgeon to choose gender change. However, what especially held my interest was the story of how the two of them developed—over the years of their romance and marriage—a relationship robust enough to handle the ultimate test of gender change.
Leslie wrote a sensitive, intelligent, heart-warming, and gut wrenching piece about her and Deborah's experience. It was a well-rounded picture of what BOTH of them went through; an unusual take on a subject that usually just considers the transgender point of view.
An unusual love story. This journey, still unfolding, is told by the spouse of a transgender. It is the ultimate story of love, tolerance, and acceptance. Leslie Fabian keeps the reader in awe, using her journal entries, telling her story with honesty, doubting herself at times, but never ever giving up on love. Family dynamics, psychological issues, faith, trust, and humor are, of course, part of this journey, but Leslie always faces them directly and with dignity. I would love to see this made into a movie. No doubt, the Kaitlyn Jenner story will, but I think this son (Deborah), brother, husband, father of six, and prominent physician, without the media hype of the Jenner story would make for one of the best love stories of all time. This book surely helped me have a better understanding of what actually occurs with a transgender person and to accept this without judgement. Most of all, this book has taught me more about love. Thank you, Leslie, for sharing the story of your marriage with Deborah. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a good read but especially to those with doubt and issues of acceptance for those with lifestyles different than their own.
A thoughtful sharing of a couples experience that may benefit others in the same situation. Thank you for sharing this unique experience with others. I have been fortunate to have heard Dr. Fabian speak. This is a well written book.
