I would prefer the lessons be grouped together. The scale studies, articulation exercizes and melodic interpretation studies are in different areas so you need to jump around, but it is a minor inconvenience. Many of the excersizes have no brakes were a breath can be taken. As one instructor suggested, cheat, leave a note out and get a breath.

This is the book I learned on over 40 years ago. I recently found Vol 1 among my old sheet music, but Vol 2 was missing, so I ordered it. I start my daily practice by going through the scales and exercises in these books. These books are still valid. I have my student on the beginning book of this series.

I've read some reviews that say both Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 of each series should be an option to buy as well, as a whole. I can understand that, but it's also nice to have as a separate book too, so a student doesn't need to buy the whole thing. Case and point; I have a horn student who plays school band music and since volume one contained the "more common" (ie concert Bb Eb etc. ) keys I immediately went for the second volume because this student could read in those previous keys (Bb Eb etc.) all day. This book can be used for self instruction, but really should be accompanied by at least a lesson here or there. As a private instructor myself, I like this because the second volume starts off where band class ended, so you can take the student outside of their comfort zone. The technical work in this particular book would even help a seasoned player touch up their technique. For more knowledgeable players, it's a great site reading and theory tool. That being said, I like to use this as supplemental material to the main studies of the student (ie band music, song performance, etc) because this book, despite its advantages, is mighty heavy and boring. The studies are written in a "box" because they are usually patterns of some type, and aren't that enjoyable to play. The monotony does get broken up with an occasional duet piece.

I went into college music school not being a good reader. But my professor made me study out of the rubank books and wow after a year my rythms got so much better from this book. It puts all rhythms that you would see in music in these little etudes and really narrows it down for you. Such a helpful book, i will use it with my students one day. I recommend for any advanced sax player who needs a better foundation of reading

If you have used the first volume of Rubank Advanced Method Saxophone, then you know what the second would seem like. Everything in this book has more scale practice, duets, articulation practice, fingering practices, etc. Rubank's Advanced Method did a great job putting this book together.

What can I say? The book is legit and is a great book for people that want to improve their skills with intonation, tone, tonguing, you name it.

Using this to get back into playing again after a 5 year break. It's an excellent tool for those looking to start playing again and familiarize themselves with different styles of playing.
