Monte Francis' true crimer, BY THEIR FATHER'S HAND, tells the story of Marcus Wesson and his unwieldy family, and the murder of nine of its members, either by Marcus himself or under his direction. The story takes place in California in the early 70s.Wesson, a seemingly intelligent but definitely deluded individual, considered himself both Jesus Christ and King of the Vampires in varying ratios at various times. A major factor in his delusion was his desire to create the purest bloodline possible - his, not surprisingly - to carry on the line of Vampistians (my term, not Wesson's). To accomplish this, he did the following: After having conceived a son by Rose Solorio, a woman fifteen years older than himself, he married one of Rose's daughters, Elizabeth with whom he proceeded to have eleven more children. Elizabeth apparently and understandably wore out, so Marcus, in his quest for more children (as well more than likely just something fun to do on those otherwise boring Friday nights) began having sex with his daughters and nieces which produced seven more children who were also his grandchildren or great nieces.Wesson and his wife did not work, though he sent his daughters out to work and took their paychecks, but lived off welfare. They had no long-term steady places to live, but wandered from a large tent in the woods to a tugboat to various houses, none of which were sufficient for the family, which at one point consisted of roughly twenty-one members living together. Fortunately, Francis provides the reader with family trees of both the Wesson and Solorio families, or the book would be impossible to follow.Wesson acted essentially as a cult leader, the absolute ruler of the clan.
