This is one of the series of the Tarzan books written by this prolific author. The book is written in an easily readable style, and makes enjoyable pleasant, light reading. The author is writing at the beginning of the 20th century, when much of the African continent was unknown. It is interesting to follow the workings of his mind, as he creates a series of interesting and unique civilizations for Tarzan and the reader to explore. As part of the format, one knows that our hero will find himself in mortal peril, but will predictably always escape, allowing us to look forward to the next book in the series.
A good read of times past. Tarzan in literature and from silent movies to talkies was a very popular hero. This book doesn't disappoint. There are the villains and the hero with a few twists along the way.
Great storytelling. I'm surprised I've not encountered many who are even familiar with the fact that there are about two dozen Tarzan books. Great storytelling. Thrilling. Killing. Blood-spilling. Also, uplifting. Tarzan confronts his noble Lord Graystoke self vs his animal instinctive youth. That tension makes the story more gripping. You'll be cheering for him and booing at his antagonists, Rokoff and Paulvitch. Easy and fun reads
WHEN I WAS IN JR HIGH SCHOOL STARTED READING THE BURROUGHS BOOKS BUT SOME OF THEM WERE CENSORED BY THE SCHOOL LIBRARIES BECAUSE THEY WERE QUESTIONABLE MORALS. I PURCHASED MY OWN COPIES IN PAPERBACK TO READ AN UNCENCORED COPY. I THEN REREAD THEM WHEN I FINISHED MY LUNCH AND WAITED FOR MY NEXT CLASS TO START. LIKE THE TITLE AN OLD FRIEND. WHEN HOMELESS HAD TO SELL ALL THE BOOKS SO NOW I AM TRYING TO REBUILD MY LIBRARY AGAIN.
Another book in the Tarzan series and one of my favorites. I like how the animals interact with Tarzan. This book shows clearly why Tarzan is the king of the Jungle. The whole series of Tarzan books are great but this one stands out in the series.
This story shows how Tarzan has the almost magical ability to command the denizens of the jungle. BURROUGHS IS such an amazing author that everything seems to come alive while reading the book. But of course it never resolves until the end and you are left imaging for yourself how they live without danger in their lives.
This is the third in the Tarzan series and it helps to read them in order - I had never read on of Burrough's Tarzan tales and thentried his Tarzan novel and was seriously surprised - if you want a terrific adventure tale, then the series is certainly worth the read - and they go surprisingly quick.
I love this author. His sense of adventure was way out there, but none the less fun to read. I have been a fan of his since I was a kid. He is a prolific writer, and one can tell the stories were originally serialized, but I have read most of his books and many of them multiple times. And the Tarzan books? Well, I have read the whole series and the first two books (he doesn't get Jane until the end of the second) I have read many times. So much fun and I recommend as good reading for teens of all ages!
