I give this book 5 stars based on several important constraints: Its a good price, its very small, its comprehensive.I have a number of songwriting books - which seems to focus on the words more than harmony or melody. Some of them are interesting and others a bit dull and get put aside after the initial excitement wears off. This book is a lot of fun in part due to its brevity. The authors cover just enough to make you confident and dangerous. Ha. I liked that this book is a one stop shop for all aspects of writing for the person finding their way around. I like the writing style and tone. Its not off putting or talking down to me.I think this book is perfectly aimed for the "do I want to write songs?" or "can I write songs" person. You don't have to buy a library of books on songwriting craft, melody, music theory, harmony concepts and how to be creative. This book will get you by. If you like your results then you can decide to invest further if needed to bolster a weakness or area of confusion.Minus is that its not very deep nor covers all the aspects of any of the topics. But what do you expect for such a small book? If you've already written a dozen songs and feel comfortable with the process you took to get to finishing them this book might be too basic for you. It could be fun to have in your bag to think about when the urge strikes but I don't want to overpromise. This book is for beginners.
Don't let the "beginning" in the title throw you off...this book is a must read for ANY songwriter interested in stretching their limits. Andrea Stolpe is a gem!
