I am a great lover of D. Scarlatti's sonatas and play them often. I have seen about the "great" urtext editions and unfortunately Schirmer does not have the greatest reputation when it comes to some piano music. Some musicians refuse to even look at them...BUT this these should be taken VERY seriously. This edition is edited by the great & famous Ralph Kirkpatrick; a harpsichordist and one amazing cataloguer of the Scarlatti Sonatas. The notes that Mr. Kirkpatrick gives in the beginning of this book should be taken to heart. He does not take the music and riddle it with unnecessary editorial markings i.e. added slurs, fingerings and dynamic markings. He has left the music as the composer has written it. I have seen other editions with the "Longo" edits and I find them unbearable to the point where I have given away those editions. If anyone can find a superior book WITH the editor's notes then please notify me. My only complaint is that there are only 60 of them. Mr. Kirkpatrick could have at least given us another 60. Thanks for the tease...I am not impressed. :) In a nutshell, those who are studying Baroque keyboard music or Scarlatti's Sonatas should have this book in their library.
If you like Domenico Scarlatti and are willing to work hard to play his music, then this edition has some delightful sonatas in store for you. Domenico can be very technically challenging with a lot of cross-hand work involving quick hops over the keyboard. His contrapuntal and melodic development make this book my constant companion. If you have not played the little-known Sonata in F Major (Sonata XXXV, K366, Vince VIII 9, Parma X 6, Longo 119) you may find the style fascinating. It begins like a fugue but only develops the theme in two voices - typical Domenico Scarlatti. The rhythm is especially interesting because it is bouncy and fun. The last Sonata in the book in B-flat Major (Sonata LX, K. 545, Parma XV 32, Longo 500) is a tremendous challenge when played at its prestissimo speed because of the unusual rhythm in the left hand.
I bought this book on .com when my teacher suggested that we would study Scarlatti Sonatas, but when I received it, I found out that this book is missing K.27, K.141 which I somehow believed this book would have because those are quite famous ones. I think I like the Kirkpatrick edition but my teacher prefers Longo edition. So, I still can't decide which edition I like better than the other. As for the actual book itself, the cover is made with a coated paper for the cover, all pages are nicely bound, the book is not too thick or heavy. Like other reviewers stated that it is a must-have, now I have it, so I should be content.
The pieces are not as easy as they look -- at least not for me.Nice big books -- usual Schirmer quality.
