Counterpoint in music is one of those topics I thought I'd never understand. I'm not classically trained and I've never found book that can describe this complex topic without resorting to very complex examples from that time period. This book is different. It is very clearly written and the author builds on topics as you progress thru the book. He does this without resorting to the pages and pages of classical examples, with little descriptive text in between that other books I've tried have. I didn't get lost 10 pages in as I have with other books.I did study some music theory prior to reading this book, probably enough to be classified at the early intermediate level for music theory. That helped me progress thru the book faster I think but I don't think it is a prerequisite for understanding this book.Only (minor) negative comment I have is that the book seems to be translated to English so there a few places where some head scratching is required to figure out what's being conveyed. These places are very few and therefore did not detract from my excellent rating of this book.
There are a lot of books on counterpoint out there and this is one of them. I still think the Fux's book is much more enlightening and it's conversational tone makes it easier to understand. That being said, this book does a great job handling the subject but just make sure you have a good background in music theory to dive in fully. The author assumes this so be prepared to get down to it straight away. I reference this book along with the Piston Counterpoint book but I rely mostly on the Fux's. I recommend this book if you are looking for a balance of material on the subject.
