This book traces golf course architects’ influences through their work with other architects and back through time to the old country (i.e., St. Andrews). However, it doesn’t go into much depth for any one architect..instead, the book provides more of a "design family tree."If you are interested in learning more about the golf architects of the early 1900s in the United States (e.g., C.B. Macdonald, Seth Raynor, A.W. Tillinghast, George C. Thomas, Jr., Alister MacKenzie, Donald Ross) and their work, I would strongly recommend “The Golden Age of Golf Design” by Geoff Shackelford. This book goes much more in depth on the architects, their design style/philosophy and includes beautiful black and white photos of their original work.If you are interested in golf course design, I would highly recommend Tom Doak’s “The Anatomy of a Golf Course,” which provides a great overview of golf course design work and the different philosophies.I would only recommend this book to someone who wants a complete history of the roots of the various golf course architects, without much depth into any one of them.
If you like Golf Course Architecture then this is the ONE book you MUST have! Good luck finding them because they are rare!
