I spend most of my time reading books rather than reviewing them, but once in awhile I find myself re-examining the reviews on and wondering what most of the reviewers saw in a particular book that I missed. This book is one of those. The main characters started out interesting, and so did the story line. The book basically starts off with a television style evangelist being shot in the head, heart, and genitals! So, the potential is there for an excellent and interesting story. Unfortunately, much of that potential remains unrealized. Instead of the story developing in an interesting way, it seems to just repeat the same pattern for a large portion of the book: Cassidy, the assistant district attorney, pursues Claire, the creative owner of the French Silk lingerie line--alternating between accusing her of murder and pursuing her romantically even though she is his prime suspect! Claire, a supposedly smart woman, is repeatedly caught in one unnecessary lie after another.I fully realize that one must often engage in a willing suspension of disbelief when entering the world of entertainment. Nevertheless, I find that it detracts from the story when characters do not act "in character." Cassidy is supposed to be a smart and upright guy, but he spends most of the book thinking with the wrong part of his anatomy. For a guy who is supposed to be a true professional, his seduction of Claire while she is still a suspect is highly unprofessional and, to me, just doesn't fit with the character traits that he is supposed to have. Moreover, even though he keeps hoping that Claire isn't guilty, he spends his time following her around rather than thinking about what other suspects might be lurking in the background.
Another excellent read by Sandra Brown. When Jackson Wilde, a well-known and prominent evangelist, is found brutally murdered in his hotel room, it will soon turn out to be a strange and baffeling mystery. At least that's what Assistant District Attorney, Robert Cassidy is thinking when he personally gets involved in the investigation. Driven by a pure ambition for the truth, Cassidy learns that Wilde had many enemies. He even suspects Wildes wife and son because he knows undoubtedly that they're having an affair. When he goes down the long list of suspects, he was not prepared when he met Claire Laurent. Not only was she beautiful in Cassidy's eyes but she was also the owner of a very sucessful erotica lingerie company named 'french silk". When Cassidy starts questioning her about the night in question, she demands to know why. He tells her it is because Wilde was constantly trying to shut her company down for the lewdness it represented. Surely she was aware of that? That makes her a number one suspect in his book. When Claire refuses to tell him anything and asks him to leave, there's only one problem. Cassidy is drawn to this woman and he doesn't want to leave. As this case slowly unfolds, Cassidy continues to goad and probe her. Why? He knows that he is slowly falling in love with Claire Larent and he also knows she is innocent. Even through her cool facade and all her lies, he knows she didn't do it. Only to prove it is all he can think of for the suspect list is mounting. As he continues to investigate, the mystery slowly unravels. Its all so unbelievable!
