I've never been much of an artist putting most of my creative energy into writing, but when I saw this book offered on Kindle, I said to myself, why not? I'm happy I got this book because even though Mr. Noot, the author is a full time artist and has years of work experience, this little book has convinced me to give drawing portraits a try. Inside I found what I needed as far as materials to get started. The section on the different pencils that are used and why a particular pencil is good for a job, was outstanding and worth the book right there. Noot, the author is a perfectionist and says that's what being an artist is all about.
This is an excellent book for the beginners who want to learn drawing realistic pencil portraits.I found this book very helpful with lots of tips and tricks to start drawing portraits. The steps mentioned in this book are very informative and easy to follow. After reading this book I got good knowledge on choosing the right pencils and papers for drawing a realistic portraits. I was happy to read chapter 7 as it covers the topic on paying extra attention to the face, which I am very eager to learn about. Helpful guide book that I would like to recommend to those who want to draw realistic pencil portraits.
This book taught me more about how to draw than the half dozen other books I have on pencil drawing, beginning with explanations of what the numbers/letters on the pencils mean and when to use them. Short, simple and very informative about lines, shading, lighting, with good examples.
There is an impressive amount of good instruction in this book. I appreciate how the author distilled what many of us think, is a complicated and somewhat intimidating process, down to its most important elements. The 10 step process makes learning to draw portraits very approachable, so that you know specifically what you need to do. This book was enjoyable and an inspiration to read.
This book is not for beginners. It did not show me how to draw at all. I needed step by step illustrations and this did not include them. I'm sure other books by this Author would be great. I will keep looking until I find what I need to draw as a beginner. It was written for someone who already has the ability to draw people. It gave good information and it was well written. I will keep it in my library when the time comes for me to advance my skills to this level.
This is a worth reading book for all art lovers! A wonderful book and shows you how to draw realistic portraits. It takes you from the beginning of a drawing to the finish. It informs you of the tools you may want to help you draw and how to use them correctly. The book covers shading, blending, drawing pet noses, eyes and fur and much more. For me, it covers the topics that I feel I need to know something about. So much recommending book for all!
While brief, this book is very helpful. The chapter on pencils was clear and did not make a person feel they need tons of stuff. I liked that many suggestions were given for when a portrait feels "off". Mr. Noot is also very upbeat.
