As a private music instructor, this is the go to beginning instruction book for a student that is enrolled in private lessons. Please note that I said "in private lessons". That is what this booked is designed for and therefore the reason that redundant information like how to assemble the saxophone, placement of the reed, cleaning, etc. are omitted. This is all information that a private instructor will personally teach the student. If you are teaching yourself to play the saxophone and do not know someone that can help you, I do not recommend this method book. This book will not teach you to play any of the exercises that it contains. The method is designed for an instructor to teach the concepts, which are progressive, and then the student to utilize the exercises in each lesson to reinforce the concept that the teacher has demonstrated. Any qualified teacher can and will easily identify the concept being taught in each lesson and show the pupil how to accomplish this concept. This book is the longest running, unedited, method book and is a staple in most music teacher's set of tools. To professional teachers, the omission of pictures and other distraction along with the ability to teach concepts and techniques freely without the dictation of written instructions is completely necessary. So, please do not buy this book in hopes that it will "teach you to play the saxophone". Only purchase this book at the recommendation of your teacher or as a supplement to a student that has already mastered the basics.

This is the old classic. It's not a quick start band method like Essential Elements (which is a good book in it's own way) this teaches the principals and gives the student a firm foundation. Frankly, it's boring- lots of scales and exercises- but used with a good teacher (the most important part) it helps to do more than teach you how to play the sax- it helps you to be a musician. Very important if you want to do more than just play in a school band.

The is the best elementary sax book ever written. The music was composed specifically for learning the saxophone. You will not come across inane children's tunes as you learn to play. no 'Hot Cross Buns,' "Go Tell Aunt Rhody," "Twinkle, Twinkle,' which is the last thing a budding jazz or classical musician needs. The book contains a fantastic pull-out finger chart as well. There is no written instruction in the book.

If you want to learn how to play the sax, this is the book to use. The book takes you by the hand and leads you through a logical progression, starting with elementary exercises and a limited range of notes. Then it gradually expands both your technique and range. If you complete this book successfully, you should have a comfortable relationship with your horn. But if you do not know how to read music, I suggest something more elementary, like Essential Elements.

This elementary method saxophone practice guide is very well organized and easy to progress to more advanced techniques. It's a good guide and I highly recommend you master it then purchase the intermediate and advanced issues as well.

This is the greatest book ever! No modern written book can compare to Hovey. It is timeless. This seemingly simple method progresses in difficulty. This guy just didn't throw together a bunch of exercises, no, he put thought and research into his method. To this day, nobody can touch this.

I forgot how challenging some of the exercises were but that is what made me a good sax player. I'm using it to get my skills back on track and I will use it to teach my 9 yr. old how to play. It covers all the skills a beginner will need.

I really cant comment on this book because my daughter uses it for her private saxophone lessons. Apparently teachers really like this book to teach lessons so I guess that means I like it too! It came very fast delivery and in perfect condition so I am very pleased. is the first place I go to when I need something and they haven't let me down much at all. Thanks !
