After obtaining a 50s era flute at a silent auction and having it reconditioned, I looked for a flute method that I could use to teach myself to play. The Rubank Method popped up and I was immediately flooded with memories from my childhood in the 60s when my music teacher used this method to teach me the clarinet. I recalled it as an effective (and fun) method with some pretty interesting drills. I immediately ordered all the flute books in the series from beginner to advanced vol. 2. I had previously ordered two other flute method books and was disappointed...too much history and music theory and no logical sequential approach to learning. I can't begin to convey how excited I am to have found this method...even the cover is exactly the same...and the price can't be beat. This series is a "must" for any serious student of the flute.

This time tested method is a God-send for those who do not care much for glossy packaging but who appreciates a technically sound methods & exercises at an affordable price.Well suited to schools and class instruction.Rubank books do not have notations or discussion notes next to the studies. PURE STUDIES for daily practice. In today's market, it will be difficult to sell this to a normal (even keel) young student - he will probably not be "inspired" by it UNLESS he possesses a strong sense of self motivation and already loves the flute.Verbatim:"Using a very well-rounded approach including scales, arpeggios, technical studies, studies for musicianship, articulation studies, solos, duets, and studies devoted to the special needs of each instrument, this series provides a fantastic wealth of material for all student musicians."Not in keeping with today's glossy trends with accompanying discussion notes - nevertheless - a classic std.

I haven't played the flute in 25 years. Decided I shouldn't let that go. This book is great for scales & for someone that needs refresher on finger chart too.

I have taught from this book for years. When learning the flute this method book steps students through a logical and simple method for learning finger technique and covers concepts that should be learned over about 2 years time for someone starting around the age of 10.

After taking about 20+ years off playing the flute I had forgotten all of the fingerings, notes, and how to read the music. This has been a great refresher and works you through each set of notes with plenty of practice snips to reinforce the skills being taught in each lesson. I would recommend this for all ages (I remember learning from these books when I was in elementary/middle school). As a parent I would assist my child in working through the books if you are doing them from home; at least until they get the hang of how to use them.Great product (for the entire series of books).

I played the flute all through school (starting after 4th grade) and recently got back into. This book is great for helping me readjust to timing and the complexities of tonguing and fingering. I wish it had a better fingering chart, though, because I suck at reading them.

This is the classic method book from (at least) 40 years ago or more. I used it when I was in beginning band, and I am now using it to teach my own flute students. The lessons are clear and concise, and build at a logical pace.No frilly stuff. Just good, down-to-earth music theory and practical instruction.

I like this book when tutoring students on a new instrument, but who are familiar with music. It works well to learn fingerings and reacquaint with rhythms. I do not recommend it for any musician who is totally unfamiliar with music reading and to someone who is younger than 12. It advances too quickly as far as I'm concerned when it comes to needing complete music learning.
