From the age of eighteen, he became a drifter. He moved from a life of drugs, alcohol and crime to homelessness. Along the way, he got married for a few months, and had a daughter from whom he is detached but adores. Still drifting, neither his addiction nor his homelessness could deter him from pursuing what he refers to as the American Dream. He pursued and earned a Bachelors degree in Sociology, and a Masters in Criminology sleeping mostly in and out of homeless shelters, in abandoned buildings and on street corners. Because of his arrest record, and imprisonment as a petty-thief some twenty five years ago, he remains unemployed and homeless, a victim of his past. How he survived it all, he says, it is because he "had some Guardian Angels" along his Homeless path.

The homeless situation in America is a question of cause and effect. The cause may, for example, be a personal problem which eventually resulted in consequences leading to homelessness. In "Guardian Angels Along My Homeless Path," Mr. Hooks retraces his journey, finding a certain efficacy for his existence in seeking higher education. A life of drugs and alcohol abuse and various arrests must have its consequences, even for someone who hasn't lived a life similar to Mr. Hooks. This book is a tremendous effort and well written account of living a life of homelessness and shows us that every person's journey is important. This is definitely worth reading.
This was a wonderful chance to journey the life of a relative I remember vaguely as a child. It was wonderful to actually read a book involving people I had a personal relationship and connection. I remember most that Ulyses traveled and was very knowledgeable. I hope that completing this book allows him the freedom of coming home. This book as it is told reflects the lives of many in America today--homelessness is an unfortunate life and with his story maybe many will see the hopelessness that many feel but also realize there is promise in "tomorrow".
