I enjoyed the story line, and learned a little about that kind of life the person in the story lead, can't say I would want to live like that but it was good to see other lifestyles, It was written as if the dog is telling it from his point of view.
I have just finished reading this beautiful book with tears in my eyes.I lived the life of the dog all the way through, perhaps because I had a dog so much like Lonesome, only she was a house dog and spoilt, Some dogs are so intelligent and always faithful. It is a butifully written story, very descriptive and you feel you are there. But I am a wilderness lover despite the fact that I grew up alone with my parents in the "Bush" and still love it.A must read for anyone who loves dogs or the wilderness
I have read all of Chris Czajkowski's books and thoroughly enjoyed them. This book was of an entirely different ilk. Although eminently readable and shadowing many of the incidents described in her first book Cabin at Singing River, this reveals a side of Czajkowski's character only hinted at in her other books. Although I am a dog lover, certainly not belonging to the legion of those owners who anthropomorphize their pets or spoil them rotten, I do believe in at least respecting the dog. I don't feel the eponymous Lonesome got much respect or affection or even much of a life from Chris, and I felt disappointed in the author because did it really need to be this way? For the affection, the aid, the effort the dog gave to Chris, what did Lonesome get in return? I must admire the brutal honesty of the author in at least not sugar-coating her treatment of her dog (certainly not a "pet") - seems some of her other dogs fared worse after a life of service. An interesting account of how another dog must live its life at the whim of its human, yet still remaining faithful to the dog-human bond. At the end of this book, you'll want to give your canine friend a hug and something to chew - maybe the book?
I've had the pleasure of reading two other books written by Chris but must say I really didn't enjoy this. In fact, I found aspects of it so disturbing I had to put it down for several weeks. Such is the quality of Chris' writing that ultimately curiosity overcame me and I had to find out what happened to Lonesome. In my view, it wasn't a fitting end for what was really a faithful companion who to me seemed ill-suited to the life her owner chose for her.I realise life in the wilderness (or for me - the Australian bush) can be tough and those who live there need to rely on their own resources but, I think an axe is a poor choice of tool for canine birth control and, to my mind, shedding tears over it doesn't make it right.Unfortunately, this will be the last of Chris' books I buy.
I enjoyed this book but sometimes felt sorry for "Lonesome", the dog talked about in the book. This dogwould have enjoyed a city life more than a life in the wilderness but he learned to deal with the situation. Most of us can relate to this in our own lives. I love reading about wilderness adventures and this bookfeatures a female owner of "Lonesome" and her adventures choosing to live in the Canadian wilderness.Good reading and a true story.
