I heard Eubie Blake's charming piano work "Chevy Chase" and decided I wanted to learn it and went hunting for the sheet music. That piece and many others are in this collection of works from the "dance craze era" of the pre-World War I era of popular music. Blake's piece is from 1914. Another work I had never heard of before I read through the works here is William H. Tyers' wonderful "Panama" from 1911. No, Tyers' work has NOTHING to do with Van Halen's song. But Tyers' work became a jazz standard for decades, but the jazz renditions are usually abbreviated in the material they use from the original and are quite different and attitude and charm than the original.Another standard that was still sung, played, and danced to in my youth of the 1960s was "Ballin' the Jack" which is also here, complete. The earliest work in this collection is 1895 and the latest is 1915 so the 34 works collected here make a nice representation of the period. There is also a two-page essay by the editor explaining a bit about the styles and social context of these dances. One thing I must discuss, however, is the cover art of the sheet music. I tremendously value that the editor has included the original cover art, albeit in black and white reprint. That helps keep the cost down, I suppose. But be prepared. Some of the art is racially shocking by today's standards. Most is just fine, if the taste in women was quite different (they preferred bigger women in that era, it seems). But some of the cover art is the kind of caricature we find associated with the old minstrel shows and are shocking to my sensibilities and have to believe they will give others concern as well.
