This is by far the best of my ukulele instruction books. The authors and DVD teacher Daniel Ho do a fine job of introducing the novice player to the ukulele, to playing chords, to strumming, to note reading. Exercises are in that sweet 80/20 spot educators like to talk about (where learners are always being pushed forward-the 20%, but also are getting reinforcement on past learning-the 80%). The idea is that 80/20 keeps students challenged, but not frustrated. (I have no idea if this came about by happy accident or intention.) This book is one of a 3-part series, each accompanied by its own DVD. There is also a compilation book that is priced below the cost of the three, but does not include the 3 DVDs. The novice player, or someone like me who has remained a little stuck at the beginner/intermediate level, would be better served spending the money on the individual book/DVDs. Buyers should keep in mind, there is no magic bullet when it comes to the ukulele. The lessons taught in Beginning Ukulele require attention and persistence (deliberate practice in response to weakness). Determined players, whether newbies or stuck in a rut, will find it very useful.
This book and the accompanying DVD are a great resource for those wanting to learn to play the ukulele. This book will take you from the very basics of first starting to play to the point of being able to make some pretty good music. It introduces you to a variety of styles and techniques, as well as to basic music theory. I would recommend this book to anyone from a complete beginner to someone who has been playing for a while but wants to become more technically proficient or expand their capabilities.
This is an excellent book and DVD combo. I am a rash beginner and this book has been very helpful. I would recommend it. It is quite in depth and better than some of the other beginner books I have. I do think it helps to have some musical background and experience playing uke. I would not have it be your only introductory material. Once I work through this, I will probably buy the next level.
Very hard to follow the video with the book, and the chapters are numbered different. It moves along quickly, but the pause option helps. As a beginner I found this frustrating. Though, he is awesome and in time I hope to go back and figure it all out.
I have just begun playing ukulele; had formerly played guitar & wanted to try a new instrument. So, I got a few books @ same time-I will admit I'm biased towards Hal leonard method bk because I've used those when learning guitar. I personally find it distracting to use DVD while playing so I won't say much about that except chapter #'s & examples in bk don't correspond to selection #'s on DVD. For my taste-he goes a little fast for a beginner but there is a variety of lessons that are covered. I feel some things were skipped over & not explained in enough detail. I'd recommend Hal Leonard Ukulele method_bk1 for a beginner.
It is a good book for beginners and early intermediate. Don't forget to watch the DVD. Highly recommended for someone who loves playing uke.
