Popular Music In America:The Beat Goes On
Ebooks To Download

Michael Campbell's best-selling POPULAR MUSIC IN AMERICA, now in its fourth edition, remains the industry standard in breadth of coverage, readability, and musical focus. The text provides a rich account of the evolution of popular music from the mid-19th century to the present. Discussions highlight connections, contrasts, and patterns of influence among artists, styles, and eras. Coverage of listening skills allows students to place music of their choice in context. The Fourth Edition expands the coverage of country, Latin, world, and late 20th century music to give instructors more options to teach the course as they choose to. A major reorganization replaces long chapters with units broken into small chapters to make the material easier for students to read and master. Units are clearly defined by style and timeframe, and chapters feature narrowly focused objectives. This edition features a vibrant, richly illustrated, magazine-like design, plus numerous online resources. Almost all listening examples are available on iTunes via dedicated playlists; instructors who adopt the text will also receives copies of the heritage 3-CD set from the 3rd edition for personal, library, and class use.Important Notice: Media content referenced within the product description or the product text may not be available in the ebook version.

This is a very readable text and certainly not atypical of the many pop music textbooks available today. There are some glaring omissions here and there, but a single textbook can't be expected to cover everything. The musical analysis also leaves a lot to be desired. There aren't any detailed listening guides and the only resource provided for students are links to YouTube playlists! This is just ridiculous given that the price is the same (or in some cases more) than similar textbooks that include at least a digital download access card or hard copy CDs. With this text, the digital downloads are $20 extra and there are--believe it or not--no CDs available for purchase with this edition. Students are expected to either pay extra for the downloads or sign up for a Coursemate subscription for a truly-too-expensive price to access the musical material. This effectively diminishes the usefulness and convenience of previous editions.

If you're going to buy this book, definitely get the kindle version! it's really convenient and you can search for text when looking for answers if you are taking a class! And you can even rent the kindle version!

This is a textbook, so like all textbooks, it's overpriced. However, for a textbook, this is a good deal. The price for a new copy of the print version at the bookstore at my school cost about $130. That being said, it is a good book. It is a little hard to read on a 10" tablet screen in the portrait mode, because the original book is larger than that, and if you make the size of the page smaller, then the text will be smaller. That's why I gave it only 4 stars. But if you just read it in the landscape mode, it's nice. By the way, don't worry about the warning that the book may not contain all of the material that's in the printed version. They're just talking about the teacher addition of the book. This is the student version. If your teacher doesn't have the recordings, you can easily find them on youtube. By the way, Kindle for Android would not let me read this book on my Galaxy S4. It said the device was incompatible. Considering that it's a little hard to read on my tablet, it's probably right.

I enjoyed reading this book. It gives you a great snapshot of how music evolved in America and what it took for the industry to become what it is today. Good read

This text gives a clear chronology of popular music in America, but it does slight certain musical styles with barely a mention. I enjoyed reading the text.

The book was in great condition and exactly what I needed for my class
