It takes a tough mindset to be a successful sniper, to be able to dig in for days on your own as you wait for your target, to stay calm on a battlefield when you yourself have become the target the enemy most want to take out. Craig Harrison has what it takes and in November 2009 in Afghanistan, under intense pressure, he saved the lives of his comrades with the longest confirmed sniper kill - 2,475 meters. In this unflinching autobiography, Craig catapults us into the heat of the action as he describes his active service in the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan, and gives heart-stopping accounts of his sniper ops as he fought for his life on the rooftops of Basra and the barren hills of Helmand province. Craig was blown up by an IED in Afghanistan and left battling severe PTSD. After his identity was revealed in the press he also had to cope with al Qaeda threats against him and his family. For Craig, the price of heroism has been devastatingly high.Powerful and compelling, The Longest Kill is a must-read for fans of military memoirs.

Craig Herrison rose through the ranks and a tough childhood to become a sniper in the war on terrorists. He became very proficient and deadly all the while leading his men with courage and conviction. Badly wounded in an IED explosion his life began to spiral. The military used hi up and spit him out. Living with his PTSD and family Craig tries to rebuild his life.

What a great book. I honestly had a hard time setting it down. Yes, it is a book about a British army sniper who holds the record for the longest confirmed kill but it is more than that. From a typical boy to a former sniper plagued by PTSD you are a witness to every step of his journey. I recommend this book very highly.

This is a great read about what it takes to be a sniper, before and after. It is simply not a job in the service, it is a way of life and will stays with you well beyond your military life. I hope that all the proceeds of this book goes to support the hardships this man and his family has endured.

Confirmed my opinion of the defence forces.....use people up and toss them out like so much rubbish. Same all over the world. I have intense sympathy for Craig ( and his family) and others in his position ( although I have trouble with all the horror and killing). Individuals are expendable to our leaders - when are they in the firing line?!At a time when Craig Harrison should have been receiving the fullest treatment and support from the army for PTSD, he was totally abandoned and worse....he was literally thrown to the wolves severely compromising his and his family's safety.

Maverick 41 was quite a character, and the first British author I read. His style was very humorous at times. Having read a number of books on snipers, I think this was one of the best. In my day, we had the 1903 Springfield and an M-1. Today, the weapons are much more sophisticated, and can reach further distances. I felt this was a very good read, but was sad in the end when he suffered from his PTSD, as so many of our warriors are suffering from today.

Thoughtful insight into a legendary shot and a devoted sniper, also a glimpse of life before ptsd and brain injuries were acknowledged (still an issue to be fully addressed on both sides of the pond). I tore thru this book in the sunshine of freedom thanks to veterans like him who answered the call to serve. Cheers to all who gave some, and to some who gave all.

I'm into this stuff so it may not require much effort to impress me, but I truly enjoyed the book. I don't understand why anyone would choose that life. If not for a couple of really long shots this would just be another really raw deal someone got from the military that we never heard of.

Good read on upbringing and what British service life is for the average soldier. Learned more about the author, his trails and tribulations, and successes. Not a lot on the science of sniping. It was the personal perspective that makes this book a must read. If you are interested in actual battles and sniping strategy, read A Sniper's Conflict: An Elite Sharpshooter’s Thrilling Account of Hunting Insurgents in Afghanistan and Iraq, by B. Monty. He's another British sniper using the same AI 338 with kills at 1500+ meters. A different experience that Craig Harrison.
