I ordered this last week and when it came in the mail yesterday, I just had to read it! Finished it this morning, and although it's highlighted up, my plan is to reread it many times before school begins again in August. My other task, is to encourage my teachers to read it and hopefully begin implementing the Fundamental 5 in their classrooms.Our campus is a Title 1 campus and our state scores have gone down in the last two years. We have to come up with a plan; how can we increase our achievement? What Cain and Laird put in this book is not rocket science. If you've been in education for any length of time, the things they talk about are things that you know. But, have you ever put them together for an extended period of time? That's what the fundamental 5 is. Combining lesson frames, working in the power zone, frequent, small-group, purposeful talk, recognition and reinforcement and critical writing to create a formula for quality instruction.What I liked most about this book, as an administrator, is that it is a quick read, but it's jam packed with great information. There is no fluff included, like in some other books I've read. The authors have been in education in various capacities and have seen first hand what they are talking about. They give explicit examples and explain the formula and it's components in a way that even a first year teacher can understand. I'm truly amazed at how much information is packed into this short book! It is one I will be recommending to many!I have been following Mr. Cain's blog for awhile as he has worked with many campuses and principals that I am familiar with. His work has been proven and comes highly recommended by others in the field.
I was impressed by this books ability to package a sequence of good instructional practices. However, it lacked the depth it needs to have to really enable meaningful instructional shift as a stand-alone product. I would like to see more examples and tools provided to the reader for each of the five elements, along with a collection of detailed example lesson plans for various grade levels and subjects complete with scripted sections illustrating the five fundamentals in each. Certainly, at a minimum, greater depth is needed in the areas of working in the zone and writing. I also suggest that more is needed in the areas of formative and summative assessment. This book is a good start, a good overview, to a highly promising set of easy to present and implement practices. In summary, however, it needs far greater depth.
Fundamental 5 should be required reading for every educator. This book should also be required for every teacher preparation program in the United States.
It. Is a five star book because it has some really good information. The seasoned as well as the new teacher can see how their plan helps to set the class up for involved learning. I originally bought it because I found their lesson planning app for the iPad. I will buy it for my son-in-law who is a new teacher.
This book has a lot of good ideas for the classroom teacher and the building administrator. Very easy read with practical ideas.
Great book for teachers and administrators. Teachers sometimes get lost in educational jargon and fads. This book, however gives practical proven methods in an easy to read, and more importantly easy to implement format. Must read for mNew and veteran teachers alike.
With the plethora of teaching books available, it's hard to know where to start. With over 20 years in between earning my teaching degree and stepping into the classroom, this little book gives me some great, practical ideas to grab onto and implement right away.
Contains fundamental dynamics for any learning experience, though people in adult education, training or leadership development would need to "translate" the ideas into their content and process areas. Highly recommend.
