This book has completely revolutionized my thinking on teaching mathematics. This book was recommended to me by a college because I teach kindergarten and had a very difficult time grasping how to best teach the foundational skills and knowledge in a way that would be truly meaningful for my students. This book does an incredible job of explaining the roots and benefits of conceptual math and most importantly how to integrate conceptual math into your classroom. This is one of the most comprehensive, concise and user-friendly education books I have ever read. Each chapter explores a new topic and goes through the key points of the topic, how students develop understanding of that topic and how teachers can support a conceptual understanding. There are lessons and activities as well as blackline masters that make implementing theses strategies very easy. I love that the content is exclusively k-2 because it allows me to focus in on what I will need for my classroom. This book helps teachers increase the rigor in their mathematics classrooms while remaining developmentally appropriate. I would highly recommend this textbook for all teachers because it does an excellent job of making conceptual math comprehensible and applicable to your classroom without an overhaul of your existing math program and practices. This books is essential as we transition to the demands of Common Core and strive to best prepare our students for college and future careers because it lays a clear foundation for what conceptual math can and should look like in a k-2 classroom in a way that is clear, concise and immediately applicable.
I am extremely cautious in purchasing materials that say they are aligned to Common Core State Standards. Many materials say they are aligned, but are not...this is! Not only will this help teachers understand the content shifts, it will most importantly support teachers with the rigorous instructional shifts required.
This resource for teaching elementary mathematics is research-based, thorough, readable, and includes examples of problems and lesson plans that bring to life the ideas the authors are presenting. It is designed to help teachers effectively implement the Common Core State Standards for mathematics and highlights activities that give students the opportunity to engage in the Standards for Mathematical Practice. Any teacher who takes to heart the ideas in this book will improve his/her instruction through an improved knowledge of the mathematics itself and through an increased use of developmentally appropriate instruction. The version for grades 3-5 is an equally valuable resource.
This book is my most favorite book I've ever read on mathematics, and I have a Masters/plus and never found a book so foundational. It breaks it down so such much my students really are able to follow what I am teaching. The very best thing is it breaks it down soooo much for me on how to teach it, most teacher books miss aspect.
I am rating this 5 stars because the teachers in my school (I am an elementary school principal) found this book extremely helpful in implementing common core math. I have top notch teachers who all were very excited to use this book. It is theoretically strong and has many practical applications within.
This book is a valuable tool for the classroom educator or instructional coach that wishes to deepen their own conceptual understanding of the mathematical strands or deepen their understanding of how children learn and their progressions for learning concepts. The book also provides example of learning activities and resources that are researched based to support classroom instruction. Finally this new edition addresses the CCSSM and it's Mathematical Practices.
This book has proved to be invaluable in the class I was taking, as well as my everyday teaching! I can't wait for school to begin to try more of them out!
I had the older edition and lent it out to a colleague and it was lost, so I had to order this newest edition. I loved the book because of it's easy explanation of the development of mathematical knowledge and the acquisition of basic numeracy, and the activities to support students in their area of development were wonderful. However, I like this edition even better because it is broken down to K-2, and the next book is grades 3-5. The first book had K-5 together, so it was difficult sometimes to see which activities were best student to primary grade students. Still an excellent teaching resource, but now enhanced with this edition because of the breaking down further of grade levels.
