For a quick summary of what you get:There are 4 tabs with vocals, 11 instrumentals. The CD has 16 cuts, but that includes both a vocal (Mary Black!) and an instrumental version of Calico Train.Seven are in open G tuning (gDGBD) -occasionally capoed up, four are in Open D (aDF# AD), two in “D tuning” (aDGBG) and one each in G modal (gDGCG) and C modal (gDGCD). The book states that C modal is also known as “double C”. However, double C” gets its name because two strings are tuned to C: the fourth and second (gCGCD).There are an even dozen tunes with up-picking (“Scruggs style”) and three with frailing Daddy Played the Banjo (in G tuning capoed up to A), Late for School (in open G tuning), and Clawhammer Medley (in open D tuning). In the CD liner notes Steve is credited with “all the frailing and most of the Scruggs style Banjo, Vocal on track 4 [Late For School]; Earl Scruggs is credited with “banjo on tracks 1 [Daddy Played Banjo] and 7 [Pretty Flowers]”; Tony Trischka is credited with “banjo on tracks 8 [Wally on the Run]. 15[The Crow]”; Pete Wernick is credited with “2nd chair banjo on tracks 6 [Words Unspoken] and 7 [Pretty Flowers]” and John McEuen is credited with “Guitar, Banjo, Bowed Guitars, Efx, Mandolin on tracks 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, 12, 14, 16”. Steve mentions that “incidentally there are words to this song [Words Unspoken], written by Pete Wernick and myself, but that will be for later exposure”; when I looked on the internet, there were a lot of websites for Words Unspoken, but none of them had the words.Note: In case you didn’t notice while listening to the CD, the clawhammer tunes are not your granddad’s “bump-ditty”.
