I feel like Ellen and I sat down together and had a wonderful conversation about our religion. She constantly interjects her teachings with her own commentary telling us to hang in there through the parts that are hard. The book is a wonderful introduction to the literature of Judaism told in a very personal way. People of all faiths will learn from this and come to know this wonderful woman. I am impressed by the depth of her knowledge and her inquisitive mind.
I have read Ellen's other books and enjoyed them. When I saw she had published this book I decided to read it and am glad I did. She describes her personal journey in a serious but light hearted way. She gives the reader an abbreviated history of the Jewish people that would be interesting to all faiths. I enjoyed this book and it just reaffirms the pride I have in being Jewish. Thanks Ellen!
A new book by Ellen Brazer written in her unique and distinctive style. The author takes one on a personalized journey describing how the death of her father brought her to embrace and understand her religion. This book answers and explains, in a very understandable manner, many aspects of Judaic teachings and traditions. The book is meant to be read by those of all faiths. The interjection of personal stories along with the explanation of many facets of the Jewish religion makes this book unique and one of the most interesting books I have ever read. It read so quickly that I was so sorry to have reached the end of the book. It greatly helped me have a better understanding of my religion.
I'm a fan of Ellen Brazer and all her books. She is a master story-teller, but in The Wondering Jew, all the stories are true, personal, and inspiring. As a practicing Roman Catholic, I took the journey with her in The Wondering Jew, and wondered at the similarities of our faiths. The Wondering Jew is not just about religion, but about faith and its promises, family and friends, and our flawed humanness. It's OK to wander sometimes in our faith; through those journeys we arrive at the wonder--and this book is full of wonderful-ness.
The Wondering Jew is a wonderful guide into understanding Judaism on a very personal level. Ellen Brazer writes with humor and a vast knowledge of the history of Judaism.Readers of any faith will find this so interesting, They will find facts and read stories they never knew about before. This is a must read for inquisitive minds.
There are many Jews who want to learn more about Judaism. Maybe they have forgotten what they learned as children in Hebrew School. Maybe they feel bewildered when they go to synagogue. Maybe they know only a little bit about the Hebrew Bible or the Jewish Holidays. An maybe they have decided that now is the time to take steps to find the information they seek. “The Wondering Jew” is the perfect resource. Ellen Brazer wanted to fill in the gaps in her own knowledge and, because she was so energized by what she discovered, she was motivated to share all that she learned. Reading “The Wondering Jew” is like spending time with a good friend. In addition to the whys and wherefores of Judaism, the author has included moving personal stories and humorous “asides” where she addresses the reader directly. This book is a well-researched and well-written gem.
This is the most wonderful story into a personal woman's life's journey as she deals with her passing of her dear father and sitting shiva helped open her eyes into her rebirth into Judaism. She has a remarkable way of Storytelling and I feel as if I personally knew the author as she allows the reader a glimpse into her personal life. I was fascinated to learn so much history about Judaism that I thought I already knew. Ellen Brazer tells the stories from the Torah in such a captivating way, I couldn't put down the book and read it all in one day. When the audio tape came out I felt even closer to the author, as she was the narrator. I will share this book with my children and my grandchildren. It is not only captivating, it is spiritual, emotional and full of wisdom.
