The pros: Every song in this book/cd is well done. You can learn these tunes through written music or tab. Good selection of old time tunes.It's nice to learn the songs on clawhammer banjo and then play along with the fiddle. Nice playing all around. The cons: Each tune played only once,whereas they should have been played at least 2 times through but better yet would have 3 times through. This would allow the student to play along with banjo or fiddle. The name of each tune should have been introduced at the beginning of each tune. Dan Levenson did that on his "old time festival tunes" book,but not on this one. That's why the 4 stars instead of 5 stars. Just the same I highly recommend this book/cd.
Helps with learning a song that I never heard before. Easy version and harder version. Both sound good. Easy sometimes sounds better. Good book glad I bought it. If you follow along on Banjo Hangout many of the tunes are in this book.
This is a first rate collection of 62 clawhammer banjo tabs, intermediate to advanced skill level, The tabs are very clearly presented, and they include chord symbols for guides to accompaniment. These are tunes that are played at old time music jams. All 62 tunes are played separately by the author on fiddle and on banjo. They are played at Goldilocks speed, not to fast and not too slow, just right. The book is worth its price for the 62 banjo and 62 fiddle tracks, with which any acoustic instrumentalist can play along -- guitarist, mandolin player, dobro player, any style of banjo player, fiddler, etc.
