This book has some of the good old hymns which sound great on the banjo. I just started back with the banjo and have found these to be good practice. I was able to get up to speed on some of the tune pretty quick. For most, if not all, songs, there is a beginner/intermediate version and then an intermediate version. This is good because if you play any of the songs in church it gives some good variety. One of the really nice things about this version is that the author has put in bold the notes that are the melody note, so they can be emphasized when playing. That way the melody comes out. It sounds like the songs and not a bunch of bluegrass notes.
This book is really helpful because of the quality of the CD. While recovering from shoulder surgery, I exercised to these songs. When I finally got to pick up my banjo again, having listened for hours to the songs really improved my ability to play them! I've been playing for about 2 1/2 years.
This is an excellent banjo songbook for both beginners and more advanced players. Being a beginner, I appreciated having some songs that I could play right away. Plus there are more advanced "fancy" versions following each hymn that I'll be able to work into as I advance in my picking. Jack Hatfield's arrangements also have the melody notes bolded in the tab so it's easy to accent the melody notes without having to spend a lot of time figuring out what they are! My only regret is that the book does not contain many many more of these arrangements - I'd love to have more like this one!
My dad loves this book. He found the solos to be very nice to play and as given his some other options in his solo playing at our local bluegrass jam.
Great book! Starting with playing the basic melodies and soon I plan on starting to go to the intermediate level. Great for beginners like me because it's a book that you can grow with!
