It's THE book to get if you've never held a bass in your life and you want to learn. Don't hesitate! But it's also so comprehensive, unless you're a music school graduate, you're guaranteed to find something useful. Tons of big, clear diagrams, notation and TAB. You don't have to read music to learn. If you only play by ear, all the examples are available online in audio and video. The author's style is funny and approachable. You won't be sorry. Make sure it's the third edition you're getting released in 2013/2014.
Thanks to the other reviewers for recommending the third edition, I was trying to decide between the available versions, then found your reviews. The book itself is great, very simply explained and comprehensive. I now understand a bit of the terminology. So, maybe I'm not so much of a dummy now? I could probably skip some parts, but my intention when purchasing this book was to take it right back to bassics (yes, deliberate misspelling) and learn from scratch and try to eliminate any bad habits which I may have accumulated.
I'm pleasantly surprised! I don't ordinarily go for "For Dummies" books, but thought I'd give this one a shot, due to the author's pedigree. I've been playing bass casually (self-taught) for quite a few years, and bought this to fill gaps in my knowledge. It's really very good! It naturally covers the fundamentals of playing mechanics, instrument setup and maintenance, a survey of basic styles, and so on. It treats those topics reasonably thoroughly, but without belaboring them. It soon gets into meatier topics that I wasn't expecting it to delve into, like modes, harmony and groove construction. It's also very clearly written and approachable. Overall, a great book!
Excellent, comprehensive, and up-to-date book that covers virtually EVERYTHING that you need to know about the bass guitar. From what to look for, how and what to buy, how to care for your bass, how and what to practice, to music theory and practical application of the bass lines you create .... it is all in this book!
My son is learning to play bass, this book has so much info in it, he loves it. He had previously played a little bit of guitar, so he wasn't completely clueless when he started the bass, but even so this book is good for anyone who plays, or is planning to learn to play.
Great book. It helped enhance my musical theory. I'm an intermediate player and I'm satisfied. Mr. Pffeifer is definitely a devoted musician. This book is not just for dummies but also experienced people.I just bought bass guitar exercises book.
Love this book! I learned so much about music theory and bass playing which would have cost me thousands of dollars if I had taken formal lessons or college courses; it is definitely a great manual for beginners or even advanced players who need to be schooled in the area of music theory or to just understand why they play what they play. The author keeps the reader engaged with his sense of humor and his knowledge, which he breaks down into baby-steps for us beginners. I love the endless bass lines and examples which are priceless. He has made my playing bass less intimidating, plus he has helped me improve and I am inspired to play more than ever!
Great book. It is something that most anybody can read and learn from. It has helped me learn an instrument that I was interested in learning and can now play. The bass is a great instrument and this this book can help you enjoy it too.
