When you are weary from toiling over your masterpiece, you must grab this book by Elizabeth Mowry, curl up in your favorite spot and just enjoy this wonderful book. The author & artist wants you to get involved with your painting and learn to FEEL what your eyes see, so that what you put on paper is part of yourself. It's your story, your vision of life. Ms. Mowry is a very talented artist who shares with the reader her thoughts & ideas that went into the many beautiful paintings she rendered in pastels & some in oils. The book is so beautifully done, with many, many beautiful landscapes she painted during her travels all over the world and her narrative about her travels and her personal thoughts about the many scenes she painted, that I didn't realize until I got well into the book that she was also giving the reader many valuable lessons in such things as structure of a painting, light source, theme painting, & individualizing one's work. Wow, what a book. It's a joy.
This book has lots of lovely pictures and pleasing thoughts but it is not an art instruction book. It's just nice to look at. If you are looking for art instruction this is not the book to buy. If you want to look at pictures and read the artist's thoughts then this is it.
Landscape MeditationsLandscape meditations is by far one of the best books I have ever read on being an Artist! In my, almost 70, years as an artist I have struggled with my eccentricities. For years I have been looking at a dead tree in a field off a busy hi-way. Elizabeth Mowry has given me "permission" to do what I should have done long ago, pull of the road and get some pix of it!!! In my case just a bit to late. The tree had finally fallen over so all I have is memories, but thats O.K. too, Now I have two, starting a third painting of that tree that I have pulled out of my mind. She has helped me realize that I am an "CRAZY" artist and that's just what I am supposed to be. Move out of the way world cause here I come. I am a MUCH better artist because of this book. It is beyond must have, it is essential!
If one likes this style of painting, it is inspirational and provides plenty of opportunity to view the authors approach and read her ruminations about the scenes she has done. My only disappointment is that she limits the discussion and display of other artists to a small preface prior to chapter one - I would have enjoyed the examination of the works of other artists to be broader and deeper. That said, I'm not unhappy with purcase and enjoy what is presented.
Inspirational and spectacularly beautiful book on achieving effects of light and color in landscape painting. I read this cover to cover for the useful information but will continue to pore through the pages for the illustrations. Mowry's paintings are romantic and ethereal, and book is inspiring for those who wish to incorporate color, light, and mood into their paintings. A must have for your library.
This is a wonderful, interesting book for the pastel artist. As other reviewers have stated, it is not an instruction book on how to paint with pastels. However, there is a lot to be learned from the book whether a pastel painter or other medium. I bought this book on the recommendation of an artist friend of mine who is an internationally recognized artist, and I have now read it front to back twice. I feel it has greatly improved my pastel painting, and my artist friend said that he could see it in my work.I would highly recommend this book for anyone wanting to improve their artistic ability.
A very interesting book.Author takes us through her ways of doing pastel, and some oil work, but with the thought process involved instead of methods of doing the work. A second reading is important to get the ideas she presents. The first reading makes it easy to just scan the pictures.and miss the important thoughts. I would love to take a class from her if it were available.
Very good book. Really get the idea that Ms. Mowrey enjoys being out in the landscape the way others enjoy going to church. The opportunity to commune with nature is very important spiritually. Given that, landscape painting is a testament to what we see. Not so much a painting tutorial as a means of appreciating the landscapes we paint. Would highly recommend.
