The author was a successful businessman who gave it all up to move to the Mississippi Delta (Clarksdale) about 12 years ago to preserve and promote the blues. He opened a store and is an event promoter. This book serves that purpose as well. It is a social story of the blues, touching on where it happened (prisons, cotton fields, juke joints, radios, race records) and who is doing it now. The last 50 pages of the book is from interviews he has done (and published) with still-living bluesmen of the delta region. While most of the history was familiar to me, the interviews were invaluable to learn more about what might be interesting to look into in blues now. There is a tendency for blues fans (like me) to love the tried and true (rural: Robert Johnson, Son House, Charlie Patton, Skip James; and electric: Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Elmore James, BB King). You've never heard of the men interviewed here, but you should. Visit his store on-line to learn more.
I loved this book! I couldn't put it down and I learned about a lot of blues music that I never knew about. I can't wait to take a trip down there next year. Great book!
Simple, informative and interesting book. The blues and it's roots is a subject that is of interest to me. This book answered most of my questions about the artists, their life and their music.
I loved the book so much I'm considering going south to visit one of guys mentioned in it to look at his collection of guitars. This is quite a wonderful book about the deep down and bluesy southern music of the Delta. I loved it the pictures..
